Carolina Martinoli, British Airways' director of brand and customer experience, said it was the first time the airline had organised such a sale.
Good sales pitch, perhaps, but total tosh. I've still got lots of knick-knacks and crockery items (, bowls, hors d'oeuvre dishes etc. ) plus Concorde luggage tags etc.. The Uniform Store always had similar items on sale and the major fleet refurbishments put thousands of catering items on boot-sale stalls. In fairness, the quality was excellent.

Whilst the bean counters might think this is a good idea, one has to wonder about what it says about the brand that they are prepared to sell off not just the family silver but also a whole load of cheap tat as well, just to cobble together a few grand. It's what you'd expect from a bankruptcy sale.

Some things are worth more than money - a fact which those running BA have failed to grasp over the last decades and which is why it has been a long long time since they have been anyone's "favourite" airline.

I used to fly BA whenever possible.

Now i only fly BA when it can't be avoided.

Qantas did this a few months ago, First PJ's, drinks carts etc etc. Sold out in a couple of days.

If you have stuff you will never need again what should you do?

Throw it away or try to sell it and raise some cash to support the business?

I'm not quite sure of the ownership of the RB-211/524G engines (BA or Rolls or a mix thereof), but at the peak, they probably had about 300 of them in service including spares. I tell you what, just throw them away!

Sorry, I don't want your type of financial management looking after my company......just saying!

Many offshore gas operators used the RB2-11 as a generator of compressing gas being sent ashore. They also used Avons. A bit different from their original purpose and an example of novel use of a good product.

You are spot on, that is where a number of the ex-BA RB.211s are going. Stripped down to the core and then used the the oil/gas industry.

I think the point she was trying to make was that it was the first time they had sold off stuff direct to the public. You are correct they had many sales in the past via uniform stores and at Waterside, selling off staff to staff [who were then free to do what they wanted with it, many sold on items]

I can see the sense in selling off a load of items, as with the retirement of the whole B747 fleet and a few of the early B777s, they don't need as many of these items, so why not make a bit of money, after all they're not making much from flying passengers at the moment..

The Conorde sale of onboard items and unsold stuff from their catalogue were direct to the public. I bought several items.

PR people love to claim that it is the 'first' or 'greatest' but it rarely is.

Mac - yes, you're quite right about staff to staff sales but I also bought a large amount from a stall at the enormous Sunday 'boot sale' off the A 3 (M3?) near Wisley.

There used to be a regular car boot sale just off the A3 between Wisley and Guildford - just before the Burpham exit. Haven't been there for years...

Back in the 1980’s BA First Class gave gifts to customers one of which was a set of Royal Doulton miniatures.

I am led to believe some enterprising crew members set up stalls selling Royal Doulton miniatures at local markets!

So selling First Class equipment directly to the public is not new.......

Back in the day, the kitchen in the flat I shared with some other BA guys had a fair amount of stuff liberated from aircraft on overnight maintenance - where everything left on board not nailed down was considered fair game. Mind you, there's only so many stainless steel sugar bowls that one can find a use for.

I still have a complete collection of these:



which are fine, provided you don't need to know the word for mobile phone or flat screen.
