A nice treat walking godg this morning as RAF herc out of Brzie came racing along at low leel over Frome, 15 mins later is back going the opposite direction.

It looks very very big aginst the SomesetSomersetyside and the hills around Frome. Any one know whknowseight they do these low levlow-levelts at . Having lived near LHR for years i am pretty good at guessing height of LHR arrivals but hey in a nice predictable straight line its flat. Do they have a mandatory 'floor' of say 500ft agl or 1000 asl?

Interesting contrast on the second pass when it just made a deep swooshing sound and appeared almost immediately while 6-7000 ft above an A400 was much noisier

These have visited from time to time, probably on some sort of navigation exercise. There are just six left in French service, eight having already been retired.

The minimum height is 250 feet msd. Minimum separation distance - ie 250 feet in any direction.

WIDN62,

Thnak you very much for your reply , msd is Minimum safe distance -yes? That was about the height i would have put the Herc at both stright line height wise and slant angle from hillside . Impressive to see and certainly brightens up the day. I was wary of saying I saw i a YYY type and it was only x hundred feet up because Pprune has a few people who unlike your helpful self seem to delight tn rubbsihing height estimates.

This was an especialy good view but this is not an uncommon event , most low level stuff iare Hercs , sometimes a An A400 but never a C17 even though they are regulars along the same route to the SW out of Brize , maybe theyare a bit too noisy at 250ft.

Thanks again and have a nice weekend

Tartans seem to be almost daily, typically north up to Telford area, across to overfly Coningsby and then towlines over the North Sea. First digit of the callsign is the day of the week (1 = Monday, 2 = Tuesday and so on) so yes, your 59 would be a Friday.

Incidentally, please explain why you were not at Lidl's on a Thursday!

Poseidon STGRY01 flying odd patterns just offshore south of Aberdeen at the moment.

Assuming SAR perhaps. Don't think we get too many submarines here off Portlethen !!!

Yes, with the aid of a small ladder to clear the top of the fence.

Heads-up. Other than unplanned diversions, most "interesting" movements seems to be flagged in advance these days, through a variety of sources (not all of which I am privy to!).

Cavok AN12 just grumbled over heading NW...

Heading up the M3 last night just approaching the M25, quite amazed to hear what could only be a Wokka over the noise of the car and "na na hey hey" issuing quite loudly from the stereo system... it was too, been for a quick whop along the Thames heli lane...

How about a Bo 737, in Virgin Australia colours, with a Dutch registration and a KLM call sign seen departing Norwich this morning?

Per Flyer Livestream last night VG were hoping to launch first rocket before Crimble but some tech issues need a-sorting before necessary CAA paperwork can be granted. Dreckley...

Perhaps Cosmic Muffin*, er, Girl should be renamed Betty Stogs...

*Remember the Boeing 307 houseboat that used to live on the waterways at Fort Lauderdale?
