BAW9170.... A380 arriving very soon at LHR from Manilla. Presumable from maintenance? Can't see that there would be a huge demand for passenger traffic between these 2 locations at the moment, but what a long way to go for maintenance. I'd have thought that Cardiff was a lot closer

No-doubt a heavy check, so more man-hours needed, so the bean counters worked out it was more economic to have it done in Manila. As BA is a Spanish company now, the thought of having Mx done in the UK to support and employ skilled UK tradespersons (thus underpining the client base in some way) isn't high on the list of priorities.

That's madness - effect on the environment for one thing.... and presumably the crew have to be flown back to the UK after the plane was flown out there for the work to be done, and then another crew flown out to bring the A380 back on completion of maintenance.

I'm not au fait with the costs of servicing large aircraft, but I'd imagine the cost of crews and fuel would be but a blip on the total costs, even if it's irrational.

BA has been sending A380s to Lufthansa Technik in Manila for the last 4 years.

Spending millions on equipping Cardiff to do heavy checks on the type, with little prospect of third-party work, would make no sense.

Just noticed on ADS, a Global Hawk over the eastern Baltic states and closer to home an Israeli B707 out of Prestwick heading SE over Lancashire.

Antonov AN-74 at Birmingham (UR-74026). Very rare sight on these shores - strange aircraft with large engines mounted on top of the wings, presumably to prevent ingress of stones and dirt when operating off rough strips.
This one brought in a Ukranian football team to play Leicester City tonight and is due out to Zaporizhia tomorrow at 1500 local

Close-ups of the interior of this aircraft at 4:53 of this video which shows some amazing, derelict old Soviet aircraft

About 20 years ago Channel Express (now Jet 2) had an AN74 reg. ES-NOB on lease for cargo charters. Not so rare in those days.

Noticed several Canadian Armed Forces aircraft landing at Gatwick recently, an A310 tonight. Have they still been regulars in the last couple of decades? Not noticed them on the ADSB sites so far as I recall. I know back in the 1970s and '80s CC-109s, CC-130s and CC-137s were in several times a week, at least when I was there which wasn't very often!

And another of the A-310s on approach into Stansted - a two pronged attack!

You're correct about Gatwick in the 70's 80's

From 1972 to 1991, Canadian Armed Forces (as it was then) operated a base at Lahr. While predominantly hosting Army units, it was also home to 444 Squadron flying the CH-136 Kiowa.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten the Kiowas. Used to see them at Greenham Common and so on. I imagine Yukons would have been regular visitors in the 60s and perhaps North Stars? Good to see they are RCAF, RCN, etc again, I kind of like the division of responsibility!

These actual A310s were daily regulars into Gatwick 30-35 years ago, as the RCAF ones are the old Wardair fleet, used for their last couple of years until Canadian Airlines took them over. Canadian then sold them on to the military. One of them has a VIP fitout and has always been sent over whenever The Queen visits Canada.
