'Significant' delays at Bristol airport

Passengers due to travel through Bristol airport today are advised to contact their airline, after a flight arriving from Frankfurt this morning "left the runway".
Nine arrivals have currently been diverted to other airports.
Eleven departures either haven't left as scheduled, or are asking passengers to wait for more information.

The Embraer RJ145 belonging to BMI Regional is understood to have left the runway whilst taxiing after landing from Frankfurt at 11:36am.
Bristol Airport said none of the 25 passengers on-board flight BM1822 were injured and they were bussed to the terminal from the aircraft.
The airport warned there may be delays as the aircraft is recovered to a parking area.

Nearly 90 cancellations yesterday (that's the total inbound and outbound) with 24 other inbounds diverted to other airports, half to BHX.

I remember an Aurigny coming off the runaway at Bristol a few years ago. Initially blamed on pilot error, but subsequently attributed (iirc) to an unusual 'ridging' on the runway surface.

December 2006 around the 21st. Weather conditions where cold with ice around. Part of the runway had been resurfaced overnight an ongoing process during that December. However due to overrunning the new surface had not been ridged and the surface was excessively slippery. The ATR slid off the runway also an Easyjet suffered as well.

Just to add to xtypeman's comment, the airport was closed for 24 hours in early January 2007 after some airlines boycotted it following the runway resurfacing problems. This allowed the runway to be grooved properly.
I remember Sky News covered live the landing of the first aircraft after the runway reopened - it was a Continental Boeing 757 from Newark that landed in wet weather amongst a shower of spray.

Skidded off the runway, travelling 120 metres along the grass.
Control was lost by the pilot as the emergency brake was mistakenly selected rather than the speed brake, according to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).
IIRC, not the first time Business Air/bmi regional has been involved in an incident and not the first time involving landings.

For interest, Captain Buchman contacted me in July 2010 to request a meeting on the occasion of his forthcoming last visit to Bristol to say thank you for my post, which had apparently contributed to his being selected to be a TC. All due to someone at the then Continental HQ seeing my post apparently, so clearly one should never underestimate the "Power of PPRuNe"! It also turned out that he is a very accomplished glider pilot.
