Anyone know what just flew over Kent?

About half an hour ago, bit more maybe - something big enough to make quite a lot of noise, don't think it was commercial, didn't look military either (at least not modern) it went over towards the channel and then back again. Saw it on the way back as cloud had cleared a bit, but it was a way away...probably about FL200.

Any ideas? Cheers

Can't be sure, but I saw the big Antonov (224?) on Flightradar travelling NW/SE over London. Certainly last weekend, so could have been the Monday.

On a similar note I just heard a strange engine going overhead - by the time I fired up Flightradar it had gone, but it was an AN-12 from East Midlands heading south over Surrey. Sorry to have missed seeing it!

Those An-12 flights from EMA seem to be a regular thing. They make an awful racket going over.

They're doing cargo runs to Spain IIRC.

AN-12's run of of BHX also, a couple of weeks ago the EMA dep was overhead of Coventry where I live @ around 10,000ft when the departing BHX flight crossed the house @ around 5000ft both heading South, it resulted in 2 x AN-12's in one small area of sky, not often that happens!

They seem to be delivering car parts under the 'just in time' strategy. Very loud as you say, but somehow the minute that they are heard is not displeasurable

Kent covers an area of over 1,400 square miles - the chances are that there's a noisy aeroplane somewhere above it most of the time.

Used to hear them operating in/out of STN when I was a kid (I lived at the time, and still live about 8 miles out from the runway, so about 2000ft for us)

Beautiful pieces of kit, but didn't half make the windows rattle, although the same can be said of some of FX's MD11s!

It drones overhead (Oxford area) pretty much every night 8.30 -ish.
Even my wife now remarks "there goes the Russian" when we hear it.

Oh! Fantastic - if only I'd known! Love a bit of Russian

Thanks guys. It was quite low and yes, not unpleasant at all, just a peculiar sound compared to the usual Easyjet and Ryanair we get here.

We're by the coast near Whitstable and get a clear view out the back probably as far as London/Oxford on a clear day...quite wonderful, sunsets lighting the planes up pink at times.

Moved here recently from a lower floor flat so it's a revelation.

Passes over me in West Berks quite regularly of an evening. Very distinctive and sounds close/low even at FL200 or so.

Often flies over Southampton although I suspect I first hear it on departure from EMA
