Watching flight BOX412 on Flight radar

Sorry for my lameness in asking this, my flight radar app on my iPad popped up with a squawk. So I opened the app up to see, it was just off the coast of Scotland and performed a uturn. Was at FL320, it's currently at FL210 by Darlington. I was wondering why if it has done a u turn and has problems, why has it not gone to the nearest airport? If there is a problem, which is severe enough to turn round then why not land at the nearest airport?

Been watching him for the last hour, stayed at FL210 for a good hour only just gone to fl190. Stayed on squawk 7700 aswell, I can only presume he is going back to FRA?

Hard to imagine even a freighter flying past that many suitable airports on one engine. Or, with an emergency of any sort.

Loss of pressurization perhaps with fuel burn back to EDDF enough to get down to landing weight? Still, would you press on all the way back to FRA at FL 190 wearing masks?

Or, loss of altimetry redundancy and inability to do RVSM? Would you squawk 7700?

Nav failures and unable MNPS?

The plane is now headed east, suddenly not going on a course back to Frankfurt.

It does, but for a plane on 7700? Looks like he only diverted from his flight path near Duisburg and now passed Warburg VOR.

Flying low, slow but not landing immediately, cracked windshield?

Leipzig-Halle is one of Aerologic's home bases. Appears to be heading there.

Good work. Looked a bit heavy from my lay persons view, 172 kts at 500 ft.

Wire_Mark:

1) For your information an aircraft turning back does not mean that the problem is serious enough to divert to the nearest airport. I was on a KLM flight which developed a problem 2.5 hrs into my flight to YVR. We went all the way back to AMS.

2) If it was an engine issue, it may well have been shut down as a precaution and not actually "failed". The a/c is perfectly capable of flying on one dong and it makes economic and logistical sense to return to the company's maintenance base if all else looks good.

Does every turn back warrant an explanation. The only difference was there were no complaints from the punters...Flight departed again after crew rest. Non event.

Strangely, Aerologic rarely get any complaints from their passengers ...
