Hi all,
For a little while now I have been in negotiations after highlighting an
interest in the retirement of several Raf Aircraft which include the
Vc10,Tristar and C130.
I mentioned there would be a lot of interest in these types especially as for
some types they are very close to leaving frontline service.
So I am very pleased to announce an event that has been put forward for us to
support.
So i am hoping that as many of my fellow colleagues,enthusiasts,can support this
to make it a successful day.
I attach details and look forward to meeting with people on the day.
Here are Details below,
With the kind permission of the Station Commander, RAF Brize Norton, a
short-notice window of opportunity has appeared that allows us to hold an
Aviation Enthusiasts' Event on Sunday 22nd September between 1000-1500 hours.
This event will be the last chance to get up close and dirty with 3 iconic
aircraft that are shortly to leave RAF service.
There will be the opportunity to view (inside and out) and photograph a Vickers
VC10, due to retire at the end of September, a Lockheed C130K, due to retire at
the end of October, and a Lockheed L1011 Tristar that is due to retire in early
2014. Throughout the day, crews and engineers from each aircraft will be
available to show enthusiasts around and answer any questions that you may have.
For security reasons, this day will only be open to 200 people on a first-come,
first-served basis, so get your bids in early!
Although the event is free, a cash donation of £20 to the RAF Benevolent Fund is
strongly encouraged and will be collected on the day. If you are interested in
coming then please email your intent to: 216Sqn-Events@... with the following
details of those in your party:
Full name
Phone number
Address
Car make, model, colour and registration (if known)
Age (if under 18)
Any special requirements
Estimated arrival time
All those attending will be parking off-base at RAF Brize Norton and, following
security checks, will be transported on and off the camp by a bus service that
will run throughout the day. Last time of entry will be 1400; last bus will
leave the camp at 1500. Please do not attempt to gain entry via the main gate –
you will be refused entry! Details on where to park and requested arrival time
will be sent with confirmation of your place.
All adults will need to bring some form of photo ID – either driving licence or
UK passport. No ID, no entry I'm afraid! The last date for UK passport holders
to send their details is Friday 13th September; the last date for foreign
passport holders to apply is Friday 6th September.
Soft drinks and a picnic area will be available, but please bring your own
packed lunch. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to purchase various
Squadron merchandise such as prints, stickers etc and get crews to autograph if
desired. Unfortunately, there will be no passenger flying or flypasts – any
aircraft movements during the day will be for operational reasons only.

Hi Knolly,
I am a CI at my local Air Cadet Sqn (1122 (Marmion) Sqn based in Tamworth) and I just wondered if it would be possible to bring 10 cadets or so down to Brize in the minibus for this event, plus 2 or 3 members of staff?

I'm going to try and get there because it is just the opportunity I need try and get a little bit of L-1011 history. Pa was the CE on the RB211 at Royce's so I have history with it.
I've been a passenger in them, but have also played with the Redifon sim, as all 18 year-olds should.

UPDATE-Photocall/Enthusiast Event Vc10/Tristar/C130K Brize Norton Sunday 22-09-2013
Hi all,I would like to mention that the support/interest has been incredible for this event.
I have been informed that as of 29th August applications are not currently being accepted .
The options we have are being looked at and responses sent out when possible.
It is also worth mentioning that an allowance needs to be made for slight delays due to items currently in the news !
I know those successful will be advised in due course.
Please bear with us on this one.

WE have just had a Brizefest covering the same, this past weekend. Can you be more detailed about the meet. I am involved with the VC10 and we have not heard of this, bearing in mind all the practices that have been going on lately for another event!

I would like to thank Wing commander Pete Morgan and all of the people that made today happen it was a excellent day and will be hoping this can happen again thanks again also big thanks to Noel for his help with this
Thanks for organising but was disappointed with event. Waited 30 minutes to get on board one aircraft as flight deck was being monopolised by 1 person. It needed RAF people to speed up this process. Queues were long so gave up and left early.
Could have done with 2 examples of each type to speed up people moving through especially the VC10 with only 1 main door. Or why not make a C17 or
A330 available as well.
Was also surprised at no bag or id check on entry.
Was it worth £20 no - not when adding fuel costs to get there.

Yes it was a shame that the queues moved very slowly for the plane visits but unless you literally gave each person an allocated amount of time, it was always going to be a bit hit and miss in this department!
Still, it was a well organised event and I hear a good amount was raised for the Benevolent fund
As to the comment about other types, I thought it was well known the event was show-casing the three types soon to retire?:

I agree the razorrawe. A great, well organised day and thoroughly worth the £20 contribution. Yes, there were queues to visit the cockpits, of course. But we arrived at 1130 and comfortably saw all 3 aircraft inside and out with only a little patience needed.
So, yes, thank you all who organised this special and very unique day. And PaulC I find it a little sad that you feel surprised that the bags were not checked. Perhaps the RAF are more realistic and much more skilled in threat assessment than your average commercial airport.

I would like to add my thanks to all concerned with organizing the event today and those there to make such a splendid day for us. For me it was well worth the trip from Cornwall. Noel Shearer, thank you for getting your idea to fly. Wing Commander Pete Morgan and your team, thank you for organising such a superb day. All the team on the ground from reception, refreshments through to the crews on the pan you all helped make a great day for me with your cheery disposition when you answered my questions that you had probably answered many times before that day. Good luck to you all wherever you land when your trusty planes retire.
