This is the culprit more than likely

From a distance the spar holding the engines might give the impression that there were 2 engines and the grey colour, especially with all the lumps and bumps could give one the illusion that it was fatter/bigger than it is and therefore, Hey Presto! A VC-10 with winglets

Yes fustall, you definitely saw a Sentinel, and Dave Reid said his money was on a Ryanair 737 - how much did you lose Dave?
Though technically my tongue-in-cheek suggestion hasn't been proved wrong yet - we're now back on the identification made originally in post #6, so who's to say we're not going to go round the loop again?

If you just look at the back end of the Bombardier Sentinel it looks very similar to a VC10,especially if you don't have anything to scale it to,ie Grey sky
Definitely not a Ryan Air 737

Just as an example of misidentifying an aircraft, only today I was looking at the clouds and perhaps several miles away taking off from London City airport was a swept-wing aircraft that for about 20 seconds looked like.....Concorde!!! (but without winglets) Really, the perspective and angle just made the shape, but then it banked to the right and the perspective changed and it was back to being 'only' a Falcon of some sort. I knew that it wasn't Concorde, but it damned well looked like it. Perhaps an even more fleeting glimpse might have convinced someone that those Frenchies had whipped their stored one out for a suprise return
