A380 at MAN question

I went to see the A380 at Manchester yesterday and was hoping to see it takeoff on runway 1, but it actually took off on runway 2 and from my viewing point I missed it.

So my question is...... does the a380 use runway 1 and is there any way of knowing in advance which runway it will take off from?

The current scheduled arrival and departure times of the EK A380 coincide with times of the day when 23L/05R is closed. So except when it is running late it will always use 23R/05L unless that runway is closed for repairs/aircraft blocking it etc.

Sorry, but your wrong

If they are on 23's, 23L (runway 'two') is always the preferred runway for take off, even during the runway two closure period. I believe it's something to do with jetblast and the Airport Pub from J1.

01/09, first flight in - used RWY 1 for arrival & departure, so cannot see what problems there would be regarding The Airport Hotel whatsoever.

also, i cant even imagining them opening up a second runway just for the 1 departure.

Exactly! They don't open up 23L just for one aircraft.

When it is dual runway ops, and EGCC is on westerlies, then 23L is the departure runway. But when on single runway ops, 23R is the normal runway of use for both departures and arrivals.

Actually, they do....23L is the preferred dep rwy and 05R the preferred arrival runway. (That's why it went around from 05R the other day, not 05L.)

Don't ask me why, though, 'cos I don't know!

With eight years CC experience this IIRC is how they operate the runway system.

With a wind favouring westerly operations they will land on 23R and take off on 23L except between midday and 3pm weekdays when it is closed, (I can't remember the w/e), to give the residents at the end of the runway a break from the noise. This was one of the zillions of agreements that was necessary to ensure runway 2 (23L/05R) could be built.

On easterlies they will land 05R and depart 05L except when it's closed and all ops go from 05L.

The A380 will use whichever runway is presently in use for departure and will not be given special considerations because of it's size or wake.

The A380 will (and does) use 23L for departures when on westerlies and 05R for arrivals when on easterlies even if runway 2 is officially closed.

I have read that its because its easier to get to and from stand 12 (no sharp turns). It departed on 23R on the 1st day of operations which has so far been the only time its done so and even then it departed from JA1, so didn't use the full length

You Tube video here of it pushing back and departing on 23L.

Hello all.

As I said earlier, 23L is the preferred runway for A380 departures and it will usually use 23L for takeoff despite the time of day. AFAIK the A380 has departed from 23L every day except for the inaugural MAN-DXB flight which was due to the large number of people at the RVP (I'd be pretty pissed off paying £12 to watch the A380 depart from 23L!).

Taken from the Aerodrome Manual 2010 V2:

6.2. Runways available
Runway 05L-23R has a total paved width of 90 metres, comprising 45 metres full
bearing strength between edge-lights, plus 2 x partially load-bearing shoulder of
23 metres width.
Runway 05R-23L has a total paved width of 60 metres, comprising 45 metres full
bearing strength between edge-lights, plus 2 x partially load-bearing shoulder of
7.5 metres width. A380 operations are certified to land on this type of runway.
A380s will generally operate through Manchester under the same Segregated
runway manner as other aircraft. The exception will be that in most cases A380s
will depart from the Runway 23L in preference to 23R. When this happens during
single-runway 23R operations, the A380 departure off 23L will be a ‘dependent’
operation. Dependant operations may be subject to short delays to enable
traffic sequencing.

The 380 is capable of using either runway. However, during Westerlies it will use 23R to land and 23L to depart, during Easterlies, 05R to land and 05L for departure. The other runway IS opened for just one movement and usually uses the same controller for both runways.
The reason for the above is to ease taxi restrictions past T3 because if the 380 were to taxi along J there could be no aircraft parked on the end of pier A or any aircraft pushing onto G.
During low viz procedures the 380 will have to use 23R/05L so these restrictions will be an issue.

Exactly! They don't open up 23L just for one aircraft.
In fact 23L/05R can be made available (even when closed) for any a/c that requests it - although they are expected to have a good reason for doing so.

CX/China freighters etc have made such requests and been accomadated .. it may mean they have a short wait to allow a pre-opening inspection and traffic sequencing.

I have heard it turned down when requested once .... but the reason there for requesting was they'd programed for the departure and didn't want to change it

Can anybody categorically confirm the number of times that the A380 has gone around/touch & go'ed at MAN since 1st Sept?
I was told today that it was 3/4 times, but I would be very surprised in only 8 days of operations.

One touch and go/ go around since Sept 1st. Due to a heavy landing on main gear, pilot initiated go around and landed about 15 mins later. 3 or 4 would have been more impressive though haha!

donnlass.
the a380 will always use gate 12 at the end of pier b.
unless of course there is a situation like last week where stand 62 will be used.
