Heathrow High Winds SAT 14th

Should be good watching the crews use their skills to land the birds tomorrow morning. Anyone have the latest WX for tomorrow morning. BBC news estimating gust upto 60mph??? in the London area.

Just hope if WX does turn out to be correct they land on 27r. The wind bouncing of the hangers seems to make it more fun.

Good luck Guys,

There are dozens of excellent weather sites, including one where you can see the Heathrow TAF. Years ago they would de-alternate if the SW wind was strong to avoid turbulence off the hangars. Don't know if they still do..

Wouldn't it be a good idea at times like this if there was another runway in a different direction. Wonder why nobody has thought of this before. Something like, say, 23, for example .........

To answer HD yes, we still de-alternate in a strong SW.

Can anyone inform a wannabe what 'de-alternate' involves? Switching to 09's? Switching from R/L?

Thanks

I think HD means no runway switching (alternation) and all landings on 27L (ie south - upwind - of the hangars).

Correct me if I'm wrong, please, HD

I meant that if the alternation procedure calls for 27R to be the landing runway, they'll change to 27L during the period of strong winds.

'Interesting' conditions at MAN

Arrived into MAN from LHR at about 20.30 this evening (13th) - some fairly ferocious crosswind gusts during takeoff and a really quite hair raising approach into MAN with many bumps inbetween - sufficiently unpleasant that the CC were suffering a little!

Roughest conditions I've experienced in nearly 5 years of commuting weekly to various European places by air, so looks like the folks up the front will be earning their money over the next couple of days

These high winds haven't really happened in London... Last night they were building up, and I thought this morning would be quite interesting; but it seems a bit calmer than expected...

Probably Britania!

Although I stand corrected (slightly). Gusts have picked up in the last hour. Doesn't seem to be that heavy though.

Not really, we had to go around at LGW when the aircraft yelled "Windsheer" at 50ft, the second approach wasn't much better but luckily there was no WS alert. Once we were on Stand an Emirates 767 did 2 go arounds and then diverted. So, not the best day for flying.

BBC reporting 47 mph winds at LHR and expected to get worse.

100mph of the Needles area. How is SOU getting on?

Port of Dover closed.

I was just looking on heathrows webcam and noticed a EuroCypria B737 at LHR. Is that a new service or diversion?

Presumably you wouldn't even attempt a landing in those conditions?

If your aircraft has a 35kts x-wind limit and 200 deg would give you a full component of x-wind (if I remember the 60/90th or more assumption correctly) would you even be allowed to land with a G55 possibility?
