UFO encounter
I am writing an article on pilots encounter with UFO´s. The stiff Germans at Lufthansa recently had the guts to report very strange flashes of lights in the nightsky over Canada. So I am hopeing for comments and suggestions from U pilots pherhaps on further reading on that subject.

Gov, wise up. You see the "Northern Lights" at any northern latitude under the right conditions. Couple of years back could I saw them over the alps, looking to the North. On one memorable occasion, on the ground on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal at Elsmere Port.

Keep in mind that remote controlled UAVs may be sharing your piece of the sky. Single engine turbojet powered contraptions such as the "Global Hawk" can operate across the Atlantic, linger over Europe 6 hours and return to USA nonstop.
Flying down an airway the other night I saw a series of lights in a perfect straight line several miles long above us.
Since they were talking to the same controller, I knew they were F16s in formation, but it would have thrown me if I hadn't.

It can happen!

Use the search function up the top. This subject has reared its head several times. Search in Jet Blast, Tech Log and I seem to recall a thread in Dunnunda (because I put a tale of my UFO turned IFO in there).
Iceland, boring? Bloody awesome place. Insane scenery, although I have not viewed it from flight levels... As for the women
Good call Tony, I saw the Aurora Australis from west of Melbourne last January - latitude 37S - thought that was impressive!

We see a lot of stuff that is hard to explain and could be some kind of military exercises or something.
The other week though, i was enroute from KTUL to KJFK at night and about one hour from JFK we saw something really really weird, at our 12 o'clock, a big streak of bright white light, we were at 41000' and the streak was way higher then us but straight ahead, it looked like some bright white fireworks!! and it was pretty big, talked to ATc, and one Southwest plane responded they saw it too.
it just "hung" there for a little bit and seemed to be burning bright white, after that it seemed to accelerate and was out of sight in a second or 2. There stayed a huge puff of smoke behind and we passed it 15 minutes later (underneath it) and that made it 125 nm ahead of us when we saw it.
Next day on the news: Old russian boosterrocket entered the upper-atmosphere and bounced off back into space.
Tell you!! but we see a lot weird stuff, daytime AND nighttime.

November 5, 1990, I was overhead Dusseldorf FL310 when a series of strange lights passed overhead, eastbound, nothing on ATC radar. Thousands of pilots reported the lights simultaneously from the UK to as far east as Turkey, made all the papers the next day. Anyone remember that?

Plenty of "sceptics" around... until they get involved in a real UFO incident. Then, perhaps not surprisingly, their attitude changes in about one nanosecond! I've been fascinated by the subject for nearly 50 years but don't expect to hear any answers (if there are any) in my life time. To add to my curiosity I was very closely involved with two UFO encounters in Africa in the late 60's, both of which were observed by experienced aviation personnel and neither of which could be explained as anything rational. "Scary" is not quite the description I'd use... "bl**dy terrifying" gets closer.
During my time at Heathrow I have also been involved with two encounters - a dark, rocket-shaped object seen flying at speed near LAM and the scary British Midland encounter at OCK. The Midland guys, knowing full well that a UFO Report would simply be binned, filed an Airmiss in the hope that an answer would be forthcoming. Unfortunately I never heard the result of the investigation..
