Due to an unexploded World War II bomb that has been found in the area, we have temporarily suspended airport operations at the request of the Metropolitan Police whilst this matter is dealt with.

Not knowing its there is one thing but once the bomb is found I would imagine it would need to be dealt with properly. Not to do so would be plain Negligence, which is slightly worse than stupid.

'er, probably because the EOD team will be onsite neutralising the device to make it safe. Otherwise pax may spill their tea as it goes bang!

You would not believe how far away from the airport (or the approach path) it was. A very over-the-top response by somebody. Not by those who actually picked it up and took it away, all respect to them, but this could have been no hazard to airport traffic at all.

Problem is though is that you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.
I believe the airport autority permitted deps off 08 ( opposite end to where the bomb was found ), but no landings on either end just in case it went off when an aircraft was on final or going around!!
Sounds sensible to me!!!!!!

That´s daily business over here in Germany. Everytime we dig a bigger hole in big cities or at airports that already existed during WWII, we find unexploded bombs.
Just recently (on November 18th to be exact) there was a big bomb found at Hannover, which could not be disarmed on location due to the bad condition (britisch quality....). After 12000 people were evacuated, it was transported to a military area close to Hannover airport (about 3 miles away, 1 mile south of the approach to runway 27L) and blasted there. I was flying to HAJ that night, funny to see all the police car lights flashing blue along the road and on the boundaries of the military area. first thought of an aircraft crash when I saw it, later heard that it was just another bomb finding/disarming/blasting.
You can bet that there are several unexploded bombs within the premises of Frankfurt airport.
btw. starting threads or writing replies including keywords like "bomb" instantly puts you on some blacklist at CIA,MI6,BND etc. so expect to be watched a little more closely by our "friends".

I work in a police control room in Brighton, nearby they had a WWII tank training ground. Always getting calls to found unexploded shells in that area.
Fishing boats have a habit of finding old mines on the seabed but the fishermen don't tell anyone until they get to harbour when the risk has increased by mooring near to other ships and shore installations.
Mind you we also get some good intent calls. One last week of a large, rusty, unexploded shell turned out to be an old boiler chucked in a hole by its former owner.

TD67 and his dad went to the Western Front area a coupla years back and got talking to a local, who told us that the farmers there are regularly crunching into stuff from the Great War in their ploughs. They have a set procedure for the local bobby to come collect it.
One incident he related, however, was slightly more amusing... young couple spotted a likely copse on a summer`s day and got at it behind said stand of trees. Mission interrupted by stinging sensation in his knees and elbows and all over her back. Went to local hospital, doctor recognised contact with mustard gas... The local authorities went to investigate and it turns out a mustard gas shell had been parked right near where they were since the War and had rusted through, leaching some of the noxious substance into the surrounding soil.
Bet that dampened their ardour...
