Ive since found out the a/c was from JFK, and had a no1 eng failure with instable No2/3/4 due fuel contamination!!!
Hence why the mayday...

Info I got from Airfield Ops was that they had a double engine failure and difficulty slowing the a/c down and performed a series of 'S' turns to loose the excess speed.
Might that have had something to do with the steep approach ?

Gladly, transferred the unfortunate lady to LUS just before the emergency.
If the a/c was from JFK then I'm not surprised the engines packed up as they had obviously flown via Japan. Remebering the strips it was out from Ramstein.
I reckon she'd spied Harvey Nicks, as the weather was so nice, and fancied some cookies!!

ETAR-KWRI
Diverted to EGLL time 1048z due shutdown of no1 engine and the remaining 3 engine running rough and unable to generate full power.
At 6 dme Rwy 27R the aircraft was at 7000ft should have been at approx 1800ft.
Pilots side slipped the aircraft generating one of the most spectacular approaches I've seen into EGLL and produced a perfect landing. They remained with EGLL Director until they were on the ground.
Well done to the pilots.

The 747 (any of them) can be sideslipped like any airplane.
I demonstrated that many times.
Just be careful with sideloads on engine pods.
Applicable warning to 707/720 and DC8, same concern applies.

The 747 is a pussy cat. Is big, yet a delight to fly.
Wish I knew the crew, know many Evergreen boys.
They are outstanding pilots, with good training standards.

Maybe they were practicing a 'canyon approach'...as an Evergreen 747 was seen recently dropping a large quantity of water.
