Barry Sheene

I would like to pay tribute to Barry Sheene MBE who has died in hospital in Australia. Twice world motorcycling champion in the 1970's.

A likeable, very talented motor-cyclist, who survived horrendous biking accidents to lose finally to cancer of the throat and stomach at the age of 52, after a brave and private fight against the over-whelming odds.

Another of life's 'larger than life' characters. He leaves a wife and two children.

Such a tragedy

Like BOAC I would like to add my tribute to Barry Sheene. I was so shocked to hear of his passing this morning, and I still cannot believe it.

He truly was an inspiration to all us bikers in 70's. I can remember like yesterday his tussles with Roberts and his cheeky 'wave' to Roberts as he blew him into the weeds.

It was great to see him over the last decade carve out a new career with Channel 10 in Australia as a motor racing commentator (both cars & Bikes), he was fantastic at that as he was at racing motor bikes.

His motivation to multi 500cc champion Mick Doohan cannot be understated, he helped Mick in many ways on and off the track.

Motor Sport has lost one of the all time greats, he popularised bike racing and for that he will never be forgotten. He was a real fighter, something cosseted modern sportsmen are not.

Ride free Barry, you will remain the true star of motor bike racing.
