Refinery explosion in NY?

There are reports that just came in about a huge explosion in NY... Nothing on CNN yet! Bogus newsflash?

Not a hoax. CNN reports it as an accident.

AND NOTHING TO DO WITH AVIATION!!

Squawk7777 21st February 2003 19:10

excuse me AT "forum police"! I posted this because I wasn't sure if it had an impact on the airports in the NY area. I was also unaware of the location at the time I posted this!

BTW ALL CAPS ...UGH!

Yes, but it just could have been and I'm grateful to the original poster that they've alerted people to it, so that we can now rule it out.

A very sad accident

Started after a tanker with 100,000 gallons of unleaded fuel was about halfway through unloading and the accident happened. No reason for the cause of the accident yet. One dead, one critical and one missing. A two mile radius around Staten Island is now a "no-fly" zone. Fire still burning due to the gasoline in the pipes around the facility burning off the residue. At the time of the explosion, you could see the smoke as far away as Trenton (60 miles SW of N.Y).

Very sad. RIP to the people who couldn't get out.

Aside from the No-Fly zone, this plant supplied fuel to three NY area airports.

Apparently as soon as petroleum traders heard the news the price of a barrel went up US$1.00. Perhaps a bit of paranoid, reactionary, knee jerk type stuff. That price hike costs my airline an extra 1 million a month.

So, perhaps, somewhat aviation related.

This accident plus possible war with Iran plus Venezuela commotion plus a fire in the BP/Amoco refinery plant in the US this week (their fuel catalictic crackng unit is still down which means no kerosene or heating oil, CHD still pumping but limited for supply of jet fuel ie a-1), will not make it easy on aviation industry. Just what we need, right?

I work for Exxonmobil, got corporate email confirming the loss of 2 contractors and an injury to 1 employee. Investigation on its way.

Take a look at this report and the pix.
