JCAB Air Law Exam
 
Can anyone suggest where to get some study material in
English :) for the JCAB air law exam? I've got an opportunity
to do some flying in Japan but I need to convert from an
FAA licence and so need to pass this written exam. It's
apparently very similar to the FARs but I don't want to walk
in cold and try to get the 80% mark required.

I imagine that inductees into JALways/ANA/NCA must get
some study material as they have to get their JCAB ATPL's.
I'd be happy to cover any postal charges if it's not in an
electronic form,

Sorry to disappoint you, arrow, but there is no such thing as a conversion in Japan - even for Japanese nationals, who have achieved a licence overseas, and return home to Japan.
You will be required to do several ground subjects (depending upon previous experience will determine exactly how many) followed by JCAB check rides - I did 3, and had over 12,000 hours TT, most of which was on "heavy" jets.

In some ways, the Japanese are kind in their underplay of certain situations (but AMAZINGLY overreactive to others!), leading one to believe that the target he desires is just within reach. However, it is often a reality that like a fly trying to escape THROUGH a clear glass window, no matter HOW hard you try, you will NEVER achieve your objective without further assistance.
And sorry, "No", as a gaijin, I am not the one who is able to help you out here.
For that you will need a Japanese (employer) sponsor.

Oooopps, nearly forgot to mention The Medical.
If you're "hell-bent" on getting into Japan, the very FIRST thing you must do is take a JCAB medical - be prepared to fork out about USD500 - to make sure that all of that hard work isn't going to be negated by a "Fail" result in the medical.
Be prepared for some tests you never knew existed!! :eek:

Without a sponsor from a Japanese airline, I do not think that you can convert on your own, at least I have never heard of it being done.

When I worked at NCA, current & qualified type rated 747 pilots had to go through the complete 6 month JCAB training program at the Haneda training center. There was no short cut, no differences training.

My only suggestion is to contact the folks at HAC to see if they can give you words of wisdom, they deal with NCA & JAL.

As far as reading material goes, a good starting point for the Air Law examination is the English language Aeronautical Information Manual - Japan ( AIM - J)

Concentrate on section Ten.

It comes out twice each year and the next version is due out about now.

Cost is Y 3500.

The reality, however, of getting to the point of doing the actual exam is well covered by the previous posts. Sponsorship is essential.

Thanks for the info guys. I've had a chat locally with someone who would be keen for me to do some private flying with him. He told me that there are English exams scheduled but they only occur about three times a year. Whether he actually envisaged 'sponsoring me' is something I need to confirm. This is (unfortunately) just for a private license.

The JCAB medical I can do in Honolulu (where I live) so I plan to have my plastic glove session when I return.

Feel free to shoot me down in flames but at present I'm chasing every opportunity I can to do some flying and I figure adding some Japan hours would be really interesting.

Now if I can only work out why all these sweet young Japanese girls keep offering me sweets:p
