Future of Expats in Korea

Any idea/roumors what will happen to expats in Korea. Just a few got a recall bout 5 month ago. No more recalls insight and those who are there can`t go home........ With the korean pilot unions help, are they "nationalizing" the company? And the merger with Asiana is just upcoming... So dark future there as well for the next couple of years?!

We discussed this a few months ago on pprune in another thread. Expats are done in Korea. Too many surplus pilots from Asiana group.

Why can't they leave Korea? No one is stopping them from leaving as long as they do PCR test which takes less than 24 hrs to receive the result to board their flights home and be quarantined when they arrive in their home. (Probably Aussies and Kiwis are the only ones having hard time heading back home).

I am certain the original poster was talking about going home on the normal commuting contract lifestyle with the block days off per month. So with 14 days of quarantine required when returning to Korea, it is not possible till rules get relaxed, so they stay full time at ICN, but I'm sure you knew that.

I think most expats have adjusted to the idea they won’t be returning and have moved on. Do you really want to be in the middle of a KAL-Asiana cockpit cultural war anyway? Remaining expats should consider themselves on a 2 month contract now that management has a taste of how disposable expats are.

I hope KAL pilots are ready for seniority integration because it’s going to be a horror show. CRM skills will be put to the ultimate test.

If seniority goes by date of hire, whatever pilot group has the most new hires pre covid is going to suffer. Those surplus Asiana pilots are going to parachute nicely into KAL seats at the expense of KAL pilots.

As indicated on other posts, I’m sure most Koreans will be happy to see the expats gone after the merge. After down bids and 15 years in the right seat with someone who doesn’t want you there, keep professional and safe. I know that’s what the expats tried to do.
