CAL Pilots Strike

According to local news, the labor action began as of 0600 local time.
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/soci...china-airlines

Among the things the union is seeking:

3 pilot crews on flights over 8 hours, and 4 pilots if over 12 hours.
Transparent upgrade selection process based on seniority and hours flown instead of company discretion
End company harassment of pilots involved in union activities
Stopping the practice of hiring foreign pilots during times when the Company is not hiring locals.

Jeez, definitely the place to avoid, must be a hard time for expat guys over there

As much as it seems anti-expat, I think any countryman would be offended by their local airline bypassing them for overseas talent, especially at higher wages. It's not like CI is getting the best of the best either, in terms of expats. Taiwan has a lot of skilled pilots probably looking for jobs with the ATR/MD88/military guys.

Usual garbage.. so you are the best of the best?flying for the best of the best?
They just hire expats based on their standards.

Most taiwanese pilots who aren’t in CAL or EVA are flying in Cambodia, I think that says it all.

Almost all local taiwanese are trained by the airline (either CAL or EVA). There is just 1 flight school in the country and it's not an Embry Riddle size, just a small ops. There are NO surplus of skilled or high time local pilots in Taiwan. Military pilots fly very few hours and when they get to the airlines they struggle.
If an expat bypasses a local for an upgrade is usually because that local guy has few hours and lacks experience. As far as I know, all pilots on the same level (FO's, etc) make the same amount of money no matter if you are expat or local, at least in EVA is like that.
Not sure when you get your info from (unless you are in CAL).

Just curious but how does a Taiwainese citizen fly in china with the first requirement being diplomatic relations?

safelife 12th Feb 2019 12:00

There is no country "Taiwan".
It is China. A single China.
Hence pilots from there are not considered foreign pilots.

Through the solo agent which is authorized by Chinese government

Politically Chinese airlines don’t consider them as expat, but
they get expat Package and not bonded as Chinese pilots.

In that case, there are many more Taiwanese pilots in Korea than Cambodia.
