The aircraft overran the runway at 11.37 a.m. local time as it arrived from Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, amid heavy rain. The pilot managed to bring the plane to a stop with its front wheel exceeding the end of the runway by a meter, preventing any major damage. None of the 215 passengers, which included six children and four infants, suffered any injuries. "The aircraft is now parked at the apron for further inspection by the authorities," Lion Air Group chief executive Edward Sirait said in a statement. "The airplane is airworthy. But, there was very heavy rain," he added. JG.. 20/02/2016 |
Is the runway grooved?
Probably a stupid question.. |
They had 3000 meters of runway with 100 meter stopways at both ends, and they still overran the runway? :ugh:
Was this RWY 10 or 28? RWY 10 has an ILS and Lion has a policy of only allowing their FOs to land when the runway has an ILS. |
Bad training standarts(could be the worst among 737 operators), that's all about it!

No, they did an excellent job in stopping with the nose wheel only slightly in the grass. Tow it back a few meters and it's back in service, what's the problem ? :E
|
Whew, I thought they would go more than a year without running off a runway. Glad to see the boys at Lion are giving us the consistency they are known for!:D:E:E

Hahaha Lion Air,
what a bunch of wannabes! My dog could fly better than that... I would pay a LOT of money to watch them fly a King Air in the Arctic! |
Lion... approach and landing

Why Tas,did you fly for them?
|
've been there for several months after my employer ceased ops, hard to explain what i saw!
|
Same mistake... for sure No auto brake very smooth landing.. Idle reverse... and out of the rwy....
Why????:=:=:uhoh::} |
How many "Long Landing" alerts were made by the EGPWS system and how many meters beyond the touchdown zone before touch down.

My circus does have a few ex Lion effoes. The common feature of their landing technique is to add thrust in the flare. The answer when queried is the desire for a smooth touchdown. That's how they were trained.
It baffles me that an airline which operates a significant portion of their flights into relatively short airstrips encourages this line of thinking with obvious consequences. |
they just upgraded a bunch of these power on landing Effffooes.. to captains.. hahaha.
I guess it the asian culture that a smooth as a baby bottom landing is a sign of a good or excellent pilot. any thump landing was awarded with WAHHH.. from the pax..with a comment ....must be the FO who landed that..:ugh: I had 2 capt who never let his FO fly.. always the captain sector..even if its 4-5 sectors per day... only reason I got told that is he always wanted his landings as a smooth bottom landings. he doesnt want any kind of bumps.. :ugh: |
The sooner Lion get expat management in flight ops and training the better. It worked for KAL.

There is some people who you would say should never be let anywhere near a airplane, but I never met so many that I did while in Indonesia, you should just see how these people drive cars. Complete lack of judgement, little or no knowledge, poor decision making, lack of experience coupled with bad weather and small runways (not even in this case!), and your looking at exactly what the problem is there year on year. They need plenty of experienced qualified expats and quick on good salary, and see what happens. At least Batik Air have seen the light..
