The problem with HK is Housing and Education allowance.(not provided ) and very expensive

VN even the copilotS smokeS in the cockpit LOL.Cheap than HONG Kong for sure. Hanoi Airport too Far from the City ,no place to Park. Company dont provide parking and so ON. NoT a good gig that'S why they are Always hiring.

squarecrow 28th Sep 2014 02:01

Ya the Smoking and dont forget the Constant playing on the I Pad LOL.

$8000 in Vietnam will probably go further than $11000 in Hongkers, in terms of getting a decent apartment or villa, and the overall cost of living.

If you have kids, I would suggest that neither contract is going to be great for you, because neither one pays education allowance, and schooling is bloody expensive in both countries.

Hong Kong - 1st World
Vietnam - 3rd World

Your choice.

too_much 28th Sep 2014 04:58

The folk in Vietnam are by far more friendly than the HK locals.

11K in HK is not good....

What are you long term career objectives? where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

alemesq 28th Sep 2014 05:36

....and if you compare with China Airlines in Taiwan ?

AQIS Boigu 28th Sep 2014 06:13

stay clear of HKA!!! VNA is a no brainer...have you thought about the Middle East?

Have a look at the cost of living/schooling/housing in HKG...your 11k will go nowhere...

How 'friendly' do you need?
You won't be mugged walking Nathan Rd at midnight alone.
Not so sure about HCMC.
And I find the ladies in HKG extremely friendly! Exceedingly so!

India Four Two 28th Sep 2014 14:46

Algol,

Based on my eight years experience, you probably won't get mugged in HCMC District 1 after midnight, unless you are foolish enough to be staggering home drunk, instead of paying $1 for a taxi.

However, you might be approached by some "friendly" ladies. ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I am from London but have been based all over Europe and also South East Asia. Not married and no kids. Spent time in Vietnam but have only heard great things with Hong Kong. Plans over the next 5 years will be to get upgraded, possibly a commuting contract such as air Japan.

Cheers

I've been in HCMC for almost a year. District 2 is getting a bit rough. Two of our guys had their backpacks grabbed while on their scooters. District 1 is fine, just grab a cab, cheap and all around.
What I can't get used to is the filth and lack of sanitation. Local restaurants with no soap and half with no running water to wash after using the toilet. Rats running, often walking, thru restaurant's eating areas. Local men and women urinating on the roadside during the middle of the day. I was sitting in a park near the back packer area, a local walks up to a tree and relieves himself in broad daylight! 30 meters behind me were public toilets.
Safe but a 5th world city. Da Nang is much nicer but there are no bases there.

Whilst what Bus Junkie says can and does happen. The backpacker district, is a pretty rough seedy place in my opinion, so if you venture just a little more upscale rather than squatting on the street, you should have no problem with toilets or soap. Etc
Just check trip advisor and look at the top 100 resturants in Ho Chi Minh, I don't think you will find those complaints..

Ya, I'd have to agree with Dihredral and think that even the world's nicest cities will have the "seedy" side to them. HCMC and Hanoi will be no different.

Just using common sense should keep most out of any harm or crime.

i lived in HCM few months, and I liked it.
Except the noise and pollution...
but people are friendly and never had a problem...I had a local vietnamese g/f, gave me ride behind her on motorbike, and I filmed, used a Gopro etc and never been attacked or else !
most of the time, girls get attacked indeed...because they are vulnerable, but vn men don't dare to touch occident men lol we are taller compared to them. So.. it's not a little vn man who would scare me.
Yes, people pee on the side of street indeed...but not at all !! most of the time it's drivers of motobike "xe om" (taxi motobike), they wait all the day here, so they need to pee here and then.
But hey, not need to go to HCM to see that. I bet you can see that in occident cities !
In HCM you can have fun for cheap ! bars, nightclubs, better food ! Just live like them and you will be happy ! :)
Personnally I i loved driving like them, not to obey rules like here in our countries...
Have fun dude ! Plus you can get girls easily ;)

Well, unhygenic as it may be according to your clinical western standards, this is closer to living as nature intended. All the modern toilet system is very harmful to mother Earth. In fact the clinical hygenic systems of the western world will be the undoing of the global eco-system.

Once the shtf with the planet returning to stone age conditions, a lot of modern humans will perish because their " clinically clean bodies " cannot cope with " natural " conditions.

I laugh at the anal retentive Aussie and Kiwis wanting to protect their shores from biohazards to their agriculture. Surely they cannot do that forever...the world is getting smaller with more frequent travellers and freight. Natural events like changing currents, wind patterns, tsunamis, etc are going to bring all kinds of off shore hazards to which their eco systems cannot cope because of " no immunity from previous exposure ", then their agriculture is going to be devastated on a grand scale instead of piecemeal outbreaks. Well to each his/her own........

The few roads of the backpacker area itself are seedy at night, but that is why people go there. The park, I'm sure you know, is not a bit seedy during the day. Sitting within sight of Ben Thanh market is a very nice family park with public toilets, that so many don't use.

So.... Can someone kindly remind me what the original discussion was about here?
