So Airbus have there first white tail A380 and the lost five more in the total order for six from Skymark Airlines of Japan.Only a few week's back they said it was due to cabin fit issues. Order back log getting smaller and difficult to sell.Already talking about a380 neo Bad decision Airbus to build this one

I guess WetWing is trying to tell us that Skymark of Japan have refused to take delivery of the first of six A380's on order and have cancelled the remaining five. He/she says the backlog of aircraft on order is shrinking, as a consequence of cancelled orders I presume, and that Airbus is having difficulty in increasing the orders. Seems WetWing believes Airbus got it wrong in building this aircraft. At least that is the way a retired F/E reads his post.

Losing the Skymark order extends a drought for the A380, which has failed to attract a new airline customer in two years and came away with no new business this month at the Farnborough Air Show, typically a forum for deals. Airbus’s most loyal buyer for the aircraft is Emirates, with 50 in service and a total of 140 on order, almost half the backlog.

Skymark cancelled six A380 orders:

One of which is already mostly built, thus now a "white tail" (finished aircraft with no corporate logo to paint on the tail, and looking for a buyer). And, per the article, already with custom fittings to Skymark's specs, and thus not necessarily ideal for other customers without a refit.

About the only thing unclear is whether wetwing thinks:

- Building the A380 was a bad decision in the first place, or
- talking about, or planning, a Neo upgrade, when they losing some orders for the original is a bad decision
- or both

I'm sure EK will take up the slack so to speak, after all they still have 40 more on order.

This is the second carrier blaming faults on cabin defects. QR's CEO was quite vocal recently on delivery problems slagging off Airbus.

A good course of action would be to offer an engine upgrade to current and future operators, preferably at low cost.
Offering a re-engine programme to operators of existing aircraft isn't going to happen, any more than it is for current A320/A330 operators when those respective Neos appear.

Poor old Nishikubo-san must have been smoking the Wacky Backy when he ordered the 4 dugongs back in 2011. He then had another puff and ordered 2 more.

The only rationale must have been that Japan Airlines was going to be buried and never resurrected.

Given the trouble they have had with the JCAB getting the 330 into the air, I guess he had no choice if he wants the airline to survive in the new cut-throat low-price (no such thing as low cost) environment in Japan.

I heard that he was told by the JCAB that they would have to route test the dugong for 6 months on domestic routes as well as do their base training in the aircraft, in Japan.

Not sure how much this cancellation will cost them but it will be cheaper than the alternative.

Not if the development costs outweigh the likely revenue. Airbus haven't even broken even on the A380 yet.
