For Airbus drivers check question

Ur on the takeoff roll and on rotation the check airman recycles ur nav Fmgs data base....

1- what will happen
2- how do u deal with this

Might sound like I'm crazy but it's happened ... Just wanted to know what others thing about it....

PT6A 17th Jan 2013 20:13

This sounds as bad as the incident also in India... Of the check pilot randomly popping CB's on a flight to "test" the candidate.

In answer to the question, don't be tempted to start playing with the box at low level.

Either fly the DP by convention means or inform ATC you will need radar vectors.

Otherwise this is a recipe for both heads down and nobody watching the shop.

After the flight, this should be a serious talking point as to what he is doing!

squarecrow 18th Jan 2013 02:33

Why would anyone F.About with anything at a critical stage of flight unnecessarily?
He is a Check Airman WTF!
He obviously wants to kill you,
Nil Further comments.

vfenext 18th Jan 2013 06:57

How on earth would cycling the DB kill you? It's not a great idea to do it but hardly a fatal action.

Dream Land 18th Jan 2013 08:06

My guess is to recycle the data base back to the correct one, turn off FD's, and then try a Direct TO something, FD back on, start building a new FP.

South Prince 18th Jan 2013 11:22

Fly safely to destination and file a report to the Company safety department and the local CAA.

ironbutt57 19th Jan 2013 07:42

The effect would be me offloading myself at the next station, and quite possibly delivering a sharp blow to the "check airman's" nose:mad:

focault 19th Jan 2013 08:02

Fly the plane, that now acts like a Cessna, clean up, do the checklist and have the check pilot removed from the cockpit. :ouch:

Nick 1 19th Jan 2013 08:06

Just say " YOU have control !"

CanadaKid 19th Jan 2013 16:51

ditto

Similair response as ironbutt57

only deliver the blow with the fire axe!

agree with all the comments above, obviously an attempt at how you would deal with a dual FMCG reset, loss of all data, but WTF, on rotation?!!!

Really, it should only a briefing item, IMHO.

Well to answer your questions:

What will happen? How to deal with it ?

As soon he recycled the database you will loose everything on your FMGS, which means V2 as well. So the first thing you will notice that you will have to carry out NO FD's take off procedure. If you are not aware of the procedure (it is MEL item, but you would have reviewed it before take off), either reject take off or carry out Unreliable Airspeed memory item and get to safe altitude before doing anything else.

This brings you to your second problem, now that you are at safe altitude you cannot carry out cleared SID or carry on to your FPR if you were on RNAV SID. So I'd request radar vectors towards the first VOR on the SID and carry out raw data flying. Once you are happily flying towards the VOR, reinsert all the data again in the FMGS including GW/CG and FOB, now you can perform direct to function and engage the autopilot. At this time give the dirtiest possible look to the Check pilot and ask him what the F was he/she thinking carrying out a stunt like that.

The best solution, given your level of experience, "You have control." and after landing write a letter to your Chief Pilot Training, I'm sure it is not part of the training syllabus.

safelife 20th Jan 2013 08:37

As long he didn't also fail an engine the same time V2 won't be critical.
Pull speed, open climb, direct to next waypoint.
AP engage, reach behind you, grab that axe.

PT6A 20th Jan 2013 09:38

Depending on the airport it could be very critical..... If this joker was fool enough to do this on rotation he could of also done it at a complex or terrain locked airport.

In our company FD takeoffs are banned except in accordance with the MEL anyway

320wonder 20th Jan 2013 10:34

if on the roll, somebody recycles the database..... u lose everything including the setup.

everything will be missing. the Aircraft should reverts itself back to HDG/TRK and VS/FPA.
maintaining whatever it was doing before the database got recycled

unless it's a complex SID. otherwise.. if thoroughly briefed and understood by both crew members,.. shouldn't be that critical. in other words, don't rely too much on the FMGS... when u fly the AP, also always review how to fly the SID in raw data.

also.. if possible.. always remember the way to force it into Alternate Law if something unexpected happens.

well.. but.. i know it's easy for me to talk here cause i am not inside the cockpit facing this situation. those are just my opinion.

PT6A 20th Jan 2013 10:51

320.... Many sids these days can't be flown raw data...... there is no getting away from it this guy is a fool for doing that in a critical phase of flight.

320wonder 20th Jan 2013 10:54

yeah... sorry.. i see what u meant... for eg.. those Rnav-1 Sid. my bad..

Flappo 21st Jan 2013 10:02

So, Reubenjosephsouza, how was the debriefing ? just curious...

reubenjosephdsouza 22nd Jan 2013 09:01

Well I I'd carry out exactly what's outhers have spoken about fly the plane first select green dot speed , alex for radar vectors to get out off the terminal area then a direct to the nearest enroute vor or database waypoint and then reconstructed the flt pln again and flew the route , that was not a problem at all , my idea of posting this was to know in generic how does one react to this kinda events in check and also to learn from others experience of how they would have done things technically and from airmanship pint of view, an yes this has happened to me on my per command assessment check for real ,

The reason I asked this was because I wanted to know do other airlines also have certain check pilots carry out stuff like that , also if any training captain are reading this I would like you guys to give me certain events or scenarios or what u guys would do or expect the to be captain to do when u guys carry out such checks . Also what is ur idea on or on what basic would u certify a sr.fo fit or unfit for command on his pre command evaluation ceck.

I'm open to ideas and briefings so Pleaselet me knw , I'll be heading for another evaluation check for my command soon. I've got 3 more eval checks before I head for my captain training,....so yup a bit excited, nervous , worried and that funny butterfly feeing I my stomach...hope. Guys understand ...thanks fr all the inputs guys

Flappo 22nd Jan 2013 09:13

Good knowledge of your aircraft... the best situational awareness and the "not-always-followed" Aviate, Navigate and Communicate.

Believe me it works.

woodja51 23rd Jan 2013 02:03

Question without knowing

By the way , does cycling the database also dump the secondary??? I cant remember and not near a sim to test it..( that way could just activate the secondary FP as a shortcut to rebuild?

Anyone, Bueller? Bueller?
