Flight Deck Announcements

Dear Aviators a humble request to Malaysia Airlines/Asian Express and Firefly:
Stop your Flight Deck Announcements once tuned into Approach Frequencies.
Jamming the frequency for 2-3mins is very risky. It happened today.
Training Capts please take note and pass on this info to the pilots.
Traffic is heavy these days within the TMA. A lot of traffic is on climb/descend within the TMA and the last thing we want to hear is the name of the Capt and your welcome speech.:=

Veloo... will you be so humble to apologize to this forum when you commit fhe same faux pas for the first time?

Flight Deck Announcements

Ctlers basically will apologize to crew if a legitimate error was
committed. I have done that on some occassions.
In this case the pilot transmitting the announcement is not aware
that he is jamming the frequency. Its only when he stops and becomes aware
when told either by the Ctler or some other crew.
In todays case a number of pilots were trying to advise the guy that he is on a wrong channel but didnt succeed to get through.
Yes I know it is a faux pas but what I am trying to get through is the severity to safety in a Approach Environment where aircraft are descending and climbing through levels within a 40 mile radius.:ugh:

No such problem on the airbus. Only the 737s. So maybe this should be directed to the MAS boys.

Boeing Europe 14th Oct 2012 15:30

He would hardly be tuned to an approach frequency when giving his "welcome announcement"...???

swh 14th Oct 2012 16:55

A lot of airports the first contact one has contact with after TWR is approach. They are controlling the close in airspace.

kwaiyai 15th Oct 2012 03:04

I dunno which Company you are with Veloo but it might be worth sending that to your own safety dept with those comments. Maybe they can then send out a memorandum to other crews. Maybe they can pass on to DCA as well.

Mr. Veloo, I fully agree with your take on unnecessary announcements that jam a busy approach frequency but I do not agree with your opinion on your colleagues (some KL controllers) with regards to apology. In fact some of your peers are downright rude and issue clearances with irritated tones.

Slashing off AGOSA estimate by 3 minutes when you are 40 miles away is impossible. Getting irritated when a pilot declines it is unprofessional.

As much as I do give credit to most of your colleagues, there are a few who give good controllers like you a bad name. For instance, I heard a controller who was pressed by a pilot for the traffic that is preventing his climb to requested level to be told off to "keep quiet".

There was once where ATC who cleared 2 aircrafts on the same taxiway facing each other not uttering a word of apology.

I would like to see KL ATC at par to the least Singapore Controllers. Don't want to compare with London yet. We have a long way to go.

Rude Ctlers at KUL

All Aviators...please do not I repeat do not hesitate to
file a report either on this forum or with Director ACC Subang
where the centre is located. There is a dedicated officer
looking into all these reports and the staff concerned are
ticked off in shift meetings not to provide such ATC services.
Recorded voices are played out during such meetings.
All you need to provide is date and time in UTC.:ugh:

greenpeace98 15th Oct 2012 07:44

Thank you very much, Mr. Veloo. Will do it the next time I encounter such issues. I do have your 016 number as well. :D

slayerdude 15th Oct 2012 10:22

Agree with veloo... PA on the air happens too often ... Using the hand set rather than headset might solve this prob......

Changi controllers..... Best equip... Best trained .... But constantly operate way below optimum ..... Generally over rated...... But visiting the changi Atcc , one would realize that it is an upper management problem....a reluctance to change

greenpeace98 15th Oct 2012 11:48

Yes, one can't help but notice the decline in Changi ATClers. Maybe they are not producing the good ones like they used to.:ugh:

paulsalem 15th Oct 2012 14:59

How about just stop making useless PA's mid flight. Do them at the gate, or not at all.

Just as I'm falling asleep on FireFly I get woken up by a 5 min PA in two languages. Just let me sleep!

Keylime 8th Nov 2012 15:09

This is really not rocket science. An easy way to prevent this is to not select PA on your radio select panel. Use the handset and make your PA, leaving your radio selected to VHF. If this doesn't make sense, pictures to follow.
