Chinese Authorities picky on Nationality?

I have been rejected by several of the Chinese Airlines, because the government apparently doesn't accept my passport!! Anyone had any experience like this?

Luke SkyToddler 13th Sep 2012 00:06

A black, british friend of mine successfully completed phone interview with a Chinese airline and got invited to fly out to China and complete the sim check, he sent them his paperwork to get the Chinese visa ... mysteriously about an hour after they received his passport photo, they emailed him back and told him the job was no longer available

airplanedriver 13th Sep 2012 01:33

Thats just pure racism!! I was under the impression that they were very paranoid for security reasons!! I too passed the preliminary assessment, then the passport was seen, and ooppps, sorry, ur rejected!! The frustrating part is that, all the jobs are basically in China, and there's no way of getting on board in-spite of having more than the requirements.

Bograt 13th Sep 2012 02:19

I'm surprised that you're surprised. This is what they do.

Bitch, complain and legislate when it is inflicted upon them elsewhere in the world, but encourage it at home. These guys and the sand-dwellers in particular.

I've seen it and lived in it for years.

airplanedriver 13th Sep 2012 02:39

Absolutely Bograt, i too have seen the racism part in many places, but nationality, has no basis, for example, my country and China have so called "very good diplomatic ties" the Chinese are everywhere, but my countrymen cant get a job in the place. Sorry, maybe surprised is the wrong word to use, but its plain hypocrisy and plain ridiculous.

RP-C000 13th Sep 2012 03:38

have you seen the way they treat their own citizens ? why would the Chinese now suddenly think about being fair and open.. :ugh:

It's not just nationality, there's more!

I have an ex colleague, Irish passport, diplomats son, happened to have been born in Africa due to his fathers' deployment oversees. My current airline needed drivers badly, and soon on the face of it He too was initially accepted. More than met all the criteria. The Airline was thrilled,......then one look at his place of birth when he sent accross his paperwork, and no way. All correspondence was terminated.

I heard some Malaysians are here in China. Could it be something else? My security clearance took couple of extra months, but it got cleared eventually. On the same token, I heard of Indonesians were not not accepted for reasons I'm not sure of. Perhaps someone from South East Asia can shed some lights?
This country's immigration and security policies are everybody's guess. No one knows for certain why and how. Even the airline HR won't utter a word and all decisions by the authority is final and non revocable. We have couple of Yanks who were having some teething delay and eventually they headed home not being able to bear the delay and fear of losing currency on type.

The Chinese have a list of nationalities. There is 3 layers. 1. countries from which workers are accepted without a problem. 2. countries from which the workers are sometimes accepted and sometimes not and 3. countries from which workers are not accepted.
You cannot normally get hold of this list. I have seen it once and wanted to photocopy it but was stopped. Many of the work agencies have the current list. You can try to ask them directly about your passport and they might answer you. But you have to do it unoficially over the phone and tell them, that you don't want to waist your time. Ask them if somebody with your passport or nationality was already accepted before. The chinese officials make the decisions on a clear policies, which are not unfortunately officially publishes. It is all internal and they keep changing the list all the time depending on politics.

I too heard about the Malaysians, wonder if anyone of them is on this forum and can share with us their experiences. I was told also about the 3 categories of countries, and i belong unfortunately to the 3rd tier!! So i guess no Chinese want me on board, hahaha. Its a shame on them really, after all i come from an Asian country too, and nationality is the only thing blocking me from a job there.

USMCProbe 13th Sep 2012 05:09

I can't tell for sure who can't get a job, but i have seen only Koreans, Mexicans, Europeans (most flavors), N Americans. Shocking to me, I heard China Southern hired a bunch of ex JAL Japanese guys. I though they hated each other.

I have personally seen no pilots from anywhere else in SE or S Asia. None from Africa. Surprisingly to me also, only a few Brits and Australians. Not sure why on this one as they usually outnumber Americans and Canadians in contract jobs.

When you get hired in China, you are initially getting hired "by China" not the airline. Your screening is starting the process to get a Chinese ATPL. The standards are probably the same for all the airlines as the CAAC is doing the screening.

Part of the process is a security background check for the CAAC crew ID card. From what the Chinese told me, if the CAAC can't check every single box, you won't pass. I saw a couple pilots fail this process. It could be that many pilots can't get a job because the Chinese already know that the particular country can't supply their required documentation for this part.

I am sure Indians don't fit the bill either to work in China!
