I happen to know the Nepalese Co-Pilot on the Cessna 172 which is from Aviatour Flight School based at Mactan International, I just called another contact of mines at the school and they are still considering the missing as Alive until otherwise proven.

The Philippines Minister of Interior was being Flown to Naga his home town, when they declared a Mayday due to Engine Failure but they never made it, one thing I noticed about that school is how many Engine failure they have had in the last 2 years, the last time it killed the Pilot but another Female Nepalese student survived that crash back in May.

Its really sad for all concerned especially his parents I hope you all pray for this Young Man's safe return his a competent Student Pilot only 19-20 years of age and had a great and bright future ahead of him.

UPDATE

It would seem the Aircraft involved was RP-431 a Piper Seneca which is owned Personally by Captain Bahinting which I tried to buy off him about 6 or so months ago.

For those who dont know Captain Bahinting is the Founder and Owner of Aviatour Flight school and his got extensive Commercial Experience and is a well respected Pilot in Philippines.

Its very Sad indeed as Capt Bahinting is a friend and the Co Pilot was a Personal Friend whom I had the pleasure of socialising with on my trips to the Philippines for those who dont know his Name is K****iz Chand his a good swimmer and a even better person so one would hope they managed to get out of the aircraft although the Aircraft wreckege they have pulled out of the water soo far shows a grim picture but here is hoping and praying they are all safe and sound.

As unfortunate as this incident is, it may have hit the President and Roxas close to home. Aircraft maintenance tracking/airworthiness, and pilot standards/CAAP oversight are the last two big issues holding up Cat 1 from what I have heard. Well besides the reports of being able to buy a licence.... I have read a few conflicting reports, most say the plane was on it's way to Naga, the other one said it could not get into Naga and was returning to Cebu when it experienced mechanical difficulty.

No doubt Capt Bahinting was a fine pilot, but what was he thinking flying a high profile Government Official with a student pilot.....I don't think this is even legal in the PH. I may be wrong but I thought the PH required two pilots for multi-engine commercial operations. Light twins are the worst place to be alone in an emergency. I am not saying the student pilot had anything to do with the crash but a qualified co-pilot could have made a difference. Hopefully recovery of the aircraft and the survivors account will answer what happened.

I also question the decision of the president and staff to all fly down together.......if something would have happened half the government would be gone.....
