Indonesian Airliner Carrying 163 Skids off Runway

A plane carrying 163 passengers and crew on a domestic flight skidded off the runway in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province on Friday but no one was hurt, the Transportation Ministry said.

The Boeing 737-400 aircraft of regional Indonesian carrier Sriwijaya Air landed at the provincial capital of Pontianak in the early afternoon before leaving the runway, Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said.

“After it touched down and was rolling it was tilting to the right and skidded off the runway,” he said.

“All passengers and crew are safe,” Ervan added. “The nosewheel is broken and the landing gear also went off into the soft soil, so the engine also is touching the ground,” he added.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but local reports said it was raining and windy when the plane came in to land on a domestic flight from Jakarta.

Indonesia, which relies heavily on air links to connect its sprawling archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, has one of Asia’s worst air safety records.

Somethings never change.

Landing on a runway in poor condition (not grooved and covered in rubber) in wet and windy conditions.....

That runway should be treated as icy from a performance standpoint.. by doing so, you may well find you are outside of limits and cant land there anyway.

About every month some airline skids off a runway here. The runways are in poor condition, not grooved and do not have any overrun areas. Add some rain and standing water. Well it's not good. :=

Well at least it wasn't Lion or Garuda this time. Guess Sriwijaya wanted to get in on the action.

I'll be surprised if the aircraft is repaired , it's suffered extensive damage.

If the fuselage has the slightest twist or bend it's a write off.

Be prepared for the usual thrust reversers , brakes and spoiler failures to be blamed as usual , rare to have a pilot error accident here in Indo.

“The nosewheel is broken and the landing gear also went off into the soft soil, so the engine also is touching the ground,” he added.
Umm , engine and pylon is torn off the wing

Indonesia's runways were fine for the F28 but are marginal for the larger versions of the 737 , the aircraft have outgrown the airport runway infrastructure at most airports.

Sriwijaya had a runway overrun last December at Yogyakarta. Rumours from within suggests the decision to return back to Yogyakarta after diverting to Surabaya was due to 'commercial pressure' from passengers who were annoyed that they diverted to Surabaya and not land in Yogyakarta earlier.
