GA in Vietnam

I am heading up to Hanoi for two seperate weeks in December and January and am hoping to get up in the air in a Single Engined aircraft.

Is anyone aware of any N reg aircraft available ? I have an FAA PP/IR.

Failing that is it possible to fly with a VN instructor ?

Grateful for any advice

This is funny, did you think that Vietnam was like heading down to Florida on vacation? :}

Now there are places in Thailand that can hook you up, good luck.

If I remember right there was one GA aircraft in all of Vietnam before I left 7 months ago. It was a King Air owned by one of the richest, or richest, guy in the country. Flown by a famous ex VAC pilot who bombed a South Vietnamese government building during the war. He had been a spy for the North in the S Vietnamese Air Force.

If you have all these credentials, you might be able to fly the second GA aircraft in Vietnam.

LOL

Well I certainly wasn't planning on any bombing runs.

Part of the reason I ask was that my club (Royal Selangor Flying Club) was planning to fly to VN in December but apparently hit problems with permissions. I do understand that GA regulations may be about to be relaxed in VN - but no hard evidence of this.

One lives in hope ..........

I read a story a year or so ago about a small 9 meter sailboat stopping in Vietnam. Sailed by a Viet war vet, he wanted to come back. When he "checked in" with the port, customs, and immigration, they had no idea what to do with him. There were no regs on 9 meter sailboats. The charged him as the smallest vessel (100 meters) that they have ever cleared. It cost him thousands. He left soon after.

Because there is no GA, there are no GA rules. Or customs or immigration for GA crews.

Not a good idea. Sorry. Thailand is much more welcoming, in hundreds of ways, including GA.

Several years ago I met a Viet Q that runs some hang gliders in the South, he received the first VN Private Pilot certificate, there was a write up in the newspaper about an ultra light that he built as a school project.

I don't have have his contact details, but he would be someone to contact, he owns a few ultra-lights, the first one made from parts that he smuggled in from the states.

If I come by his name I will post it.

Cheers, D.L.
