Deer Air
Hi all, I'm thinking of making a move to the east and it seems Deer has arguably the best A320 contract. However, I can't seem to find a whole lot of info on the screening process, commuting to the U.S., living in Guangzhou or Xian, etc., etc. Any and all comments please, I need to make a decision among all the A320 skipper slots open in Asia really soon, so opinions on other Asian contracts welcome (I've read the thread on Shenzhen, so no comment needed there!) Thanks.

Yea, check out www.uplusaviation.com
Shanghai is a nice place to live. Juneyao is much better than deer. vrsc |
I am trying to figure out how Juneyao is better than Deer. Similar monthly base salary, but Deer is a 6/2 week rotation plus 4 weeks vacation. Also Deers salary is based on 80 hours, and Juneyaos is based on 90. Under Chinese law, 90 hours is the max, so no overtime at Juneyao. I haven't worked at either place, but a couple guys flying for Deer are pretty positive. I interview there on the 19th. Sounds like you might be the agency that sent the link.......
|
PROBEUSMC, I see from your location you're in Saigon. Are you with VN Airlines? If you're leaving can you say why? It would be great if you could post your screening experience with Deer.
|
Jarhead - Will they let you ride your Piaggio in China ? :}
Cheers from Down Under :ok: |
It seems like a lot of the screening itself with the Chinese Airlines is the same. The written test is with the CAAC, and I am not sure if the sim is not also with the CAAC. I have been trying to answer that on PPRUNE but no response so far. There is a lot of info on this site about the screening in China. If you search "CAAC written test" there is a wealth of info. I hope it is correct, because it is all I have to go on!!!!
No Lambretta in China unfortunately. Almost all Asian countries make it nearly impossible to import used bikes. I will just have to ride what they ride..... I will keep you posted with my progress. |
Deer Air Screening
Also interested in info on Deer Air...thanks but no recruiters
|
USMC, thanks, listening out.
How about Asiana? Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info on them from anyone working there. |
No i'm not the agency. They are just my broker and it is an alternative to the VOR people. I have been a captain at Juneyao for a few years now. If you don't like it...don't apply! It is just fyi.
vrsc |
So, VRSC, could you give a little summary about working at Juneyao and living in Shanghai?
|
Deer is OK... Do your homework!
|
Yes, I've already determined that Deer is one of the better contracts out there, but not much more than that. There isn't too much info on the actual 'experience' of living & working there. I'd also be remiss not to check out the alternatives, what may be great for you may not be so much for me. So, BTW if you don't mind, what do you think of the job so far? Where are you based, & how is it living there? Family friendly?

Went to PEK for 18 April screening with Deer. Passed the written test but failed the medical. I am so glad i failed. Reason: thyroid medication...told no pilots can fly in china on any medication...have been using for ten years and have a category one medical.
This was a dog and pony show! We were treated like s:mad:. I simply don't see how this company will attract and retain foreign pilots with the treatment we received. The whole screening was so amateurish i fail to see how this company can suceed. Wrote the exam in Tianjin...3 hour bus ride that turned into 5 1/2 hrs due traffic. The train would have taken 45 mins. Pick up was at 06:00 with no breakfast and then expected to travel and write crucial exam. Fortunately, examiner let us into afternoon exam session or trip would have been wasted. All three of us passed. Sat around for two days in hotel in middle of screening week and shown no goodwill by Deer or Parc in form of city tour, dinner or real estate/apartment visits. Colleagues that went to Spring screening treated far better. The Deer owned hotel stunk, literally. Even with bathroom door closed and drains covered it was pungent! Hotel staff was belligerent when I tried to change rooms. Put up in unrenovated wing of hotel. Staff constantly shouting in hallway and banging door across from room.. Was so glad to leave that cesspool and never plan to return. Contract flying is not for me...I have a great job and don't need this abuse or insulting and demeaning treatment. Be forewarned! I had flown to PEK, PVG and HKG many, many times for one day layovers in recent past while flying the A340. I thought I knew the place, culture and ways of business. Man was I mistaken and am so glad I saw this. Its now one thing i know i do not want to do. Good Luck to those that do! |
AGREE!!! But the initial screening process does not reflect the working conditions and treatment at Deer, or Capital Airlines as it is now.... After you get the job it's a whole new ENCHILADA!
100% that their screening process SUCKS A$$... Organization and treatment... ZERO! BTW CBJ is one of about 12 HNA Group Airlines, and they all seem to follow the same interview "rules"... No wonder why we R short! Sad reality... Best of Luck! |
Deer Air
Initial screening in China is not easy and involves a lot of patience.
Deer Air now know as Capital Jet is a great company to work for. Everybody treats you very nice and respectful. I wouldn't change for any other company in China. |

Deer Air (Capital)
Hello, I have a friend that has been working for Deer Air for right on 2 years and loves it. He was one of the first pilots hired and I have been talking to him from the beginning up until now. I remember when he first started with some of the growing pains but he sure likes his job now.
I think from what I have heard. it seems like the place to be in China, or one of the few good places to be. He told me the approaches were all in the data base, you can manage non percision approaches, western culture with the pilot group ( no old chinese senior captain politics, they dont really like laowais we make more money)paid on time, they treat him very good. The interview process in China from what I have heard and experienced myself seems about the same. The western pilots like myself are use to a better lifestyle and accomodations than the Chinese. So, on the interview most places will tend to suck..!! Like JoJo mentioned once you are flying the line it is a different World, and how you are treated then and paid is most important. One thing for sure, China is short pilots and you will see the pay keep going up and up. It is hard for the Chinese carriers to get pilots to work and stay for any length of time because it is so far away. Good Luck, On Final |
Chinese CAAC Written Test
Hello,
From what I have read and posted myself in the Chinese Written Thread is pretty acurate information. Just read through the thread again, study the Gliem, go over the sample CAAC questions and you should pass the exam. It is a tough exam but do able, but no fun to study for. Once you pass, you wont have to take it again. Good Luck, On Final |
It is hard for the Chinese carriers to get pilots to work and stay for any length of time because it is so far away. Broken promises about T&Cs, contract changes when they feel like it with no consultation and no recourse, fines for foqa events and late flights, ****ty 2 star hotels on layovers, just to name a few. I'm not saying Deer Air is like this, but there are many carriers out there who are. |
Oh, and to top it all off you will literally be poisoning yourself, do a little googling on pollution in China, and while you're at it google the cost of 2 new lungs and an esophagus
|
Deer Air
Just want to emphasize that Deer Air (now Capital Jet) has NEVER treated any of us like ****. We have been treated great.
|
does anyone know how to get the circling approach-VMC only limitation removed from the license???
|
Hi Dagar, check with your authoriry to find out the process, normally a training is needed to remove VMC.

Star, as far as I know, no PIC and current on equipment, no job! As per the CAAC.
Also FO positions are non existent for foreigners in China, except for RJ's and 170-190's at the most. Bad news as I have many friends in your same position... |
Correction to my previous post, was told via PM that Okay Air and maybe others hire foreign FO's...
Sorry, but I have no additional info, no clue on agency, etc.! Maybe direct contract. |
PanAm can remove your circling restriction. About 1K for the cost. They can find you a sim partner sometimes.
|
CAE also has a program (FAA certified) to remove the restriction. Maybe Pan Am does as well. I did it with FTI, and had to do it twice, as their program was not certified (my second was the certification sim).
I am currently in China with Capitol/Deer. I have been here almost 2 months, with pay, but still haven't turned a wheel (or stick). We have been treated very well, but it is very disorganized. With all Chinese carriers you need to get a Chinese ATPL (written test), medical, and after that they apply for an airport ID, which is a security background check. Until you get thru this, you ain't working here. Air China does it before they have you come to work here. Capitol does it after you get here. The difference? You may not "pass". If you are from a country that doesn't comply with their paperwork standards, you may not pass, even if you are a friggin astronaut. There is a pilot from Europe that came here in May. They sent him home because his background check was taking too long. I thought he would eventually come, but I asked 3 days ago and they said "probably not". Maybe they don't want to spend the time. I don't know. I DO KNOW that if this guy gave up his last job, he got screwed. Capitol has also changed their screening (maybe it will change again tomorrow). Now you have to come twice, once for the ATP and medical, and after that the sim. Then a 3rd time to come to work, after which they apply for your ID (security check), which you may not pass. Very difficult if you currently have a job. And if you give it up, and come and THEN fail the security check, you are done. I think it will work out OK for me, but I am not sure if I could recommend it to anyone until they figure out what they are doing. If you are unemployed go for it, but to give up a job, and then have a reasonable chance of not getting this one, may not be worth the risk. |
Deer Air/Capital Air
Hello Fellow pilots,
I have a friend at Deer Air/Capital Air , he has been there 2 years and likes it. It is true most Chinese carriers are disorganised and it is a long process from start to completion of line training. The risks are high in China for the pilot who signs an agency contract. Seems agents and Chinese carriers try to block the pilot from working else where in China if he leaves the airline, in some cases fails the process. Sometimes pilots spend 6 months trying to get through the process and the end game fails somewhere along the line. Then leaves and looks for another job, very painful. Some pilots are out 3000 to 5000 USD in air tickets, hotels and never get reimbursed. Just make sure before you make the first move you have a GOOD Agency, and Airline you want to work for from the get-go. Make sure in your agency is a good one, and your contract has language on who pays Taxes, when you get paid, training pay, reimbursements and after you complete you contract you will get a release letter (make sure it is quick) to work at another Chinese carrier if you like. Good Luck, On Final |
Can you be more specific concerning the feedback for Juneyao?
Are they reliable? I have heard they don't pay on time, etc... thanks! |
