Indigo Or Air India... Which is a better option??
 

Hi All,

Just been able to clear Indigo and Air India as trainee pilot.


Which one is a better option??

Heard if i join indigo i would be able to get online faster... But also heard AI is taking for 777 this time.. but they would take around 2 yrs for training and then put as second officer..

Also if AI put me as second officer then it will take more time to become first officer....

With a handle like yours, it doesn't surprise me you know very little about the aviation industry:rolleyes:

What they are trying to say is that AI is job security. It is state run and your pay check will keep coming.

Remember this is aviation, the most important quality you will need to succeed is PATIENCE. The rest will come.

ok here's my two rupees worth...

it all depends on what stage in life you are, if you're 20 years old, single and have the rest of your life in aviation, eyes closed join AI and dont listen to any @#$% your friends in the private airlines tell you for the next 2 years, tell them I'll see you when you're 30 and we'll compare notes.....

if you're 35-40(max agelimit) , got the wife, 2 kids, housing loan to take care of etc.etc. maybe not a bad bet to join the private airline , get a fairly decent pay from start , get your command in <5 years and start saving for your retirement .....

what picollo suggests is absolutely right ...patience is the key and if you're a S/O on the 777 for a while , that's fine, we're a bit spoilt here in India,an average pilot that joins an airline like cathay as an S/O has 2000 plus hours plus an ATP and turboprop /jet hours under his/her belt.....let's not get blinded by the hype .......

Isnt there a matter of type rating also involved?
Indigo only has a self sponsored A320 program. AI I would beleive have a different plan for the 737/777

good words from an experienced hand masalama....i guess the chap must be a 20 yr old and just getting to grips..but what you said is the way to go..

I do believe that AI has a training bond in place for all the SO's joining up. And dont think twice.Its gotta be AI. Untill recently,I believe they took trainee pilots on the 738's( AIE ),but from the last recruitment onwards its direct 777 for Cpl ab inito's. What more could u ask for bubba.And believe me it WILL take u at the best part of the 24 months in coming to terms with the procedures/RT/SOP's etc of the triple.....

One of my friends is in Indian as a F/O and is getting around 60 hours a month ...

Well, if you do clear the AI medicals now and "getting command" is not of much concern, then AI it is.

But I would agree with what masalama said.

Air India pilots are the ONLY Indian civil pilots who fly the Indian President and Prime Minister.

At the end of each trip with the President, the pilots and spouses are sent First Class tickets to join the President for High Tea at the Presidential Palace.

The last I heard, Indigo pilots are not even served hot meals on board regular flights !

Come on buddy.....which one would you choose ?

Go to Qantas Jet Base. Go to Air NZ Training Division. Go to Cathay City. Go visit Singapore Airlines. Now go to Air India Operations at the Old Airport.

Now Go Figure.

I just think you should investigate all of what you are getting yourself in for. So many pilots go overseas without knowing where they will be working exactly, and the conditions involved.

AussieMaverick, congrats on getting the job offers. I am wondering, how did u prepare for ur interview?I am planning on going India soon to apply for a job. I have 350hrs TT and I am just about to sit my MEIR flight test here in New Zealand. I have already passed my conversion exams and I have a valid Indian Class 1 medical.

Anyways, from the posts that i have seen, I dont think any of the people who have replied to this post, work at Air India.
I am an FO at AI.

I am amazed at the stupidity of people who assume that being a government carrier, the job will last you a life time. Just look around the world and see what happened to other government airlines, example Varig, and Alitalia. In case the naive dont know, half of Varig's pilots are currently in AI and AI Express!!
as for Alitalia a few months ago the government was ready to sell it off to any buyer for the token ammount of 1 Euro!!.

So getting back to the post, i dont think it is a no brainer in favour of Air India.
For one it will take you for ever to get command; as on date we have 10 year co-pilots, who are eligible for command, also 80 first officers who meet all requirements for command upgrade, but for the last one year no command training.

Also flying the B 777 as your first aircraft may not be the best idea. It will take you about 2 years to get to the right seat, till then you will just be doing RT!! Not the best way to start your career. Also when you do get finally released, being on a long haul aircraft you will barely get any Pilot Flying sectors, as opposed to an average of 3 to 4 Pilot Flying sectors in a domestic airline. I personally feel, that being your first type rating, this will be your chance to learn handling of a jet. Being an FO on the big wide body like the B 777 for your first type rating will give your ego a boost, but wont do you much good professionally.
