Enemy? You really ought to read posts properly. Who called you the enemy? I certainly did not. Maybe you feel you are and need to defend yourself! I merely mentioned that this was a pilots' board, and was surprised to see a "manager" calling comments or opinions dangerous, idiotic etc.l

I would have done slingsby, had the 'politician' paid me three months notice money as per contract, but he tried to do it on the cheap by holding my contract renewal on his table until my work permit ran out and immigration put me on the next plane out. He's that kind of guy - just look at his previous history. Anyway, with a little help from my friends, he beat me to the departure gate and I'm still here. I would suggest you call/email both Direct and Air Astana to ask very directly those questions.
"SUPERB" can mean literally anything and keep in mind what is superb for one is peanuts to another so I would take it all with a pinch of salt.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, any DECENT airline/agency will be upfront about Ts &Cs including pay upfront and not try to hide it or come up with slogans about new and improved this and that! Why do you think t is new and improved??!!:uhoh: Maybe because they got no takers?
I do noyhave any hard and recent news on this but I have no reason to as what they offered me was utterly laughable. Agreed, it was a year or so ago but I don't think it will have "improved" that much.
Try your 757 or 767 skills elsewhere where the remuneration package matches your professional skills and you do not end up flying for food!
I'll give another example from a few years back when a certain airline was desperate for pilots and offering paenuts for a salary. They tried to cover up the poor salary by saying that $3,000/month goes a long way in city XXX and the cost of living is very low. Then, in the next breath, they said you had to pay your own airfare for the interview and your own recurrent training. Everything was them, them, them. It made me wonder how desperate they REALLY were and why they advertised the same stuff continuously for about a year.
I was waiting for a class date with another company and was not really interested in company X but wantedto find out what the deal was. Naturally I declined and they said they were sorry to hear that and that when they could no longer attract the right caliber of applicant, they would then raise the starting salary. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot!!
Good luck which ever way you decide to go, but don't say you were not warned and don't go expecting industry standard pay and conditions - it simply won't happen. I've been around this business too long to fall for a trick like that......................

Over the last few hours my vocabulary has imporved to include some new terms and definitions..


My previous education had lead me to believe that "Superb" translated into reactions such as ..WOW...AWSOME...AMAZING ..ETC..ETC...

However, in Kazikstan and Air Astana, "Superb" means,,,.........ready for this...

ya , thats only a little over 8,000 USD for a 767 Captain...Superbley inadaquate i would say.

For comparison, u can work in the UK as a 767 Capt right now for 6,000+ GBP ($ 11,700 USD) ...

By my calculations adding in the Salary of 6200 a month PLUS the per diem which could get up to EUR1000 per month we get to EUR7200 a month which is US$9500 a month. Add in the accomodation included plus the LOW cost of living out there and you're telling me that's a bad deal?! And the Hotel out there I was told is the Hyatt, not the Holiday Inn!

UK costs of living and finding somewhere to live and any TAXES due would soon diminish that UK£6000 per month methinks...

I'd consider it myself if I was thinking of changing jobs....

Well lets break it down, just for fun of course.

If u worked in the UK for 6,000 GBP ( plus ur duty/allowances) you get a lot more bang for your buck,

First off, Healthcare, a social security net, a modern country with laws written in stone, you can reduce ur living exp if you buy your home. ie you have a NORMAL life, you have rights and most important you got a reasonable outlook for what you can expect.

Of course you taxes pay for this, but there is an quantifiable return.

On the other hand Kazikstan is an adventure, you are in a country where you have no rights, the law certainly will not be impartial, healtcare? ... well, u've see what soviet aircrafts look like, u really want to see the inside of a soviet style Operating room :uhoh:

Liveing in a hotel , even 5* is only fun for about the first day or so, how long can u really do this ?? Plus hotel food / drinks very expensive.

Fact is , its a bit off the beat and track, and for that it should pay a premium, over and above what you can do in a developed country.

Look and compare contacts in the Mid East, Asia etc , most pay better that this and have long established track records. Plus most are in countries that also have been flowing with information and therefore not so much of a "shot in the dark " ..

Hey, im not knocking it just for spite, its just not my cup of tea. ..

Would be interested to hear of someone actually working there for more that 6 mnts and see how they are doing..

Don't know so much about Air Astana, but I can speak a little about Almaty (ALA)
I spend a least a week each month in this city. Great town, don't be wrong, it's not a remote area. Almaty expanding very fast, people are really more friendly than up north (perhaps due to asia influence)
Cost of life going up, not so far than western cities, you can find what you want in town and if you want more...go to the fabulous moutains (half hour from downtown and enjoy the scenario, so great.
The winter should be hard, ok, but a lot of sunny days after snow shover!
One tip... check you weather, alternate and minima before, especially at night.

Hey there! I just got an offer to work for Air Astana and I've scheduled an interview and sim for jan. Does anybody have any idea on what the interview consists of and if the sim is a full check ride? Any info on this and the company as a whole is greatly appreciated!:ok:

Has anyone in Air Astana got any personal accounts/experiences of life living in Almaty and working for Astana ..... Is it everything you were promised or expected ? Were you made to feel welcome ? Is it somewhere you could imagine spending a long time ?
There is a lot about it that I like on paper (long trips to Europe, Tax free? etc).... but is that a fair reflection of reality ? If anyone has any advice then I am all ears ...

Just to post the latest info regarding Air Astana,I was "invited" for a sim/interview for January but get this, I was expected to pay for my own airfare and hotel. So much for an "invitation".....and if they can't pay for airfare plus hotel then they have bigger issues to sort out!!
The agency dealing with this contract is Direct Personnel and the contact is Barbara Kelly....
The salary quoted in an earlier post is true and you stay at the hotel (Hyatt) for one month then they give you $US2000/month for an appartment.
I have some former colleagues who are there and seem to be enjoying it and it's a case of different strokes for different folks......
Time off,travel to and from home are vague at best.....
They are getting 2 B767's at the end of Feb and are expanding so this becomes a coin toss for those who are interested...just my 2 cents worth and good luck....

I too was quoted an FO salary of 4200 Euro per month plus 50 per diem. That is signfiicantly below my current gross earnings, but if I could sort out my tax affairs to make it tax free, it would work out marginally better. In the circumstances, the attraction was to live and work in a very different location...I was in it for the experience, not the money.

However, when I was advised that sim testing and interview were in Amsterdam, with travel at my own expense, I politely declined the offer. If this is what they expect from you at interview stage, my opinion was that it could be an indicator of worse things to come. With the amount of 767 openings advertised, I would be more than interested to see where they source their pilots from on this package.
