Provided you can stand on one foot for 30 seconds with your eyes closed, you're in!!

Seriously, it's not a difficult medical even though it has that reputation. They give you an epilepsy test which is not done anywhere else in the world now, even ridiculed elsewhere, but is responsible for knocking back a few who don't have epilepsy (that's why it's no longer done elsewhere), and provided you don't have a Body Mass Index that only a 150 kg, 1.5 metre guy would have, you should pass.

Then the difficult part starts; you have to deal with JCAB examiners, the bonanza pilots who examine on everything from lighties to 747's. They're another story.

It is a little more involved than some other contry's medicals, Jobear.
The best thing is do NOT tell them about it - and I understand that if there were any medical procedures, they are only interested in those from the past 5 years.
Here's a link to JCAB Medical, tips and hints that will help explain a few things.
JapJok is a disillusioned pilot, who enjoys putting crap on the Japanese for EVERYTHING, so I'll leave it up to you to determine how much credence you give his comments.

Again - do NOT tell them about it. If it is "discovered" during your check, you can always say, something like, "Oh that! Yes I'd forgotten completely about it, it has never given me any problems since."
Don't volunteer ANYTHING that might remotely sink you.
If YOU mention it, they will take it to be something of a VERY serious nature.

You're a little unfair Kaptin. You couldn't discredit anything I say in my post.

The stand on one leg routine is still there for initial medicals; the epilepsy test IS discredited in most countries; your BMI would have to be extraordinarily high to fail on that criteria, and anybody who says being examined by a GA pilot is OK or a breeze is nuts. All of the JCAB examiners I've come in contact wiht wouldn't know if their butts were punched, bored or drilled.

And believe me I'm not a disillusioned pilot, but let's not get into a brawl over Japan. Some love it, and some less than love it, but that's OK. Jobear asked a question, and I contributed. I don't think it's a difficult medical in spite of its reputation; a little quirky perhaps, but not difficult.

That is only ONE test of a literal battery of checks potential candidates are subjected to, and which JapJok having succesfully passed, now dismisses as something "of a breeze".

The REALITY is, only 1 in 5 pilots will pass the initial JCAB P.E. (Check my "tips" posted above, for a greatly improved success rate! )
1 out of 3 will get through the ground school.
Most will pass the initial sim check.
50% will pass the JCAB final line clearance.
Less than 50% of the above will last longer than 5 years, to renew their contract!

Well, the kaptin is up to his game of oneupmanship again.
The statistics as I know them are:
In our company, not one recruit failed the initial JCAB medical, not even the pre medical medical when you're screened on arrival to ensure you will pass;
Not one failed the ground school;
Not one failed the initial sim check;
One failed the final check to line, but passed on his second attempt, and
Very few of the original number are left, and I think only one is going to renew (Our experience is similar on that one).
So it seems our experiences are widely at variance, but I stick by my original assertion and that is the JCAB medical is not a difficult medical, quirky perhaps, but not difficult.
I'm sure the kaptin will want to have the final say though. Wouldn't you hate to be married to him; his wife would never be right, poor girl.
