rejected take off

need some help here guys....what is the definition of a take off?? Any idea where I can find the black and white of it??. An aircraft has already lined up on the runway. Before it actually starts to roll a technical fault was discovered and a request to taxi off the runway was made and granted. Does this consistute a rejected take off??

takeoff - In respect of an aircraft other than an airship or a balloon, the act of leaving a supporting surface, including the take-off run and the acts immediately preceding and following the leaving of that surface.

rejected takeoff - A planned takeoff that is discontinued for reasons such as conflicting traffic, aircraft malfunction, weather, or take-off surface obstacles.

swh,

Out of idle curiosity, where did that definition come from?

FAA definition from my memory - when the power levers are advanced for the purpose of flight

swh 15th Apr 2005 05:26

Snooze,

It was a UK one, nothing in the Malaysian Civil Aviation Act, or Regulations for a defninition of takeoff.

From ICAO ..

Rejected Takeoff
During takeoff, from the point where the decision to abort has been taken until the aircraft begins to taxi from the runway. Rejected takeoff is a sub‑phase of the takeoff phase of flight.

Takeoff
1) Phase of flight: From the application of takeoff power, through rotation and to an altitude of 35 feet above runway elevation.

2) Sub‑phase of the takeoff phase of flight: From the application of takeoff power, through rotation and to an altitude of 35 feet above runway elevation or until gear‑up selection, whichever comes first.

Taxi

The aircraft is moving on the aerodrome surface under its own power prior to takeoff or after landing. Taxi is a phase of flight.

Taxi from Runway
Begins upon exiting the landing runway and terminates upon arrival at the gate, ramp, apron, or parking area, when the aircraft ceases to move under its own power. Taxi from runway is a sub‑phase of the taxi phase of flight.

Taxi to Runway
Commences when the aircraft begins to move under its own power leaving the gate, ramp, apron, or parking area, and terminates upon reaching the runway. Taxi to runway is a sub‑phase of the taxi phase of flight.

Taxi to Takeoff Position
From entering the runway until reaching the takeoff position. Taxi to takeoff position is a sub‑phase of the taxi phase of flight.

Rejected TO or Discontinued TO

A crew is on the runway setting the power for take off and they noticed an inconsistency with the EGT, before reaching take off power with a speed of aprox 40 Kts, the Take off is discontinued but in the Maintenance log the incident is reported as a Rejected Take Off by the crew. There are big issues due to the use of this terms in a maintenance log as you can imagine.

I need to find the difference betwen the 2 definitions and where can I find the info. to support the use of them.

Definition of takeoff as per ICAO / CAST:

homepage: http://66.89.54.147/index.cfm?fuseaction=cast.main

specific page: http://66.89.54.147/index.cfm?fuseac...ossary&Range=p

Takeoff:

1) Phase of flight: From the application of takeoff power, through rotation and to an altitude of 35 feet above runway elevation.

2) Sub‑phase of the takeoff phase of flight: From the application of takeoff power, through rotation and to an altitude of 35 feet above runway elevation or until gear‑up selection, whichever comes first.

Company policy manuals usually further define the phase more finely to: "when the thrust levers are advanced for the purpose of flight" or words to that effect. ie if you push the TL way forward but still not enough to fly the plane, then it means that you are not intending to fly but to taxi crazily fast.

So in your case, the fault was discovered before the moment / action of pushing the TL / pressing the TOGA switches for takeoff power setting, so that means it is NOT a rejected takeoff.

A crew is on the runway setting the power for take off and they noticed an inconsistency with the EGT, before reaching take off power with a speed of aprox 40 Kts, the Take off is discontinued but in the Maintenance log the incident is reported as a Rejected Take Off by the crew. It appears that a Rejected Take Off was performed.

Once you SET (ie advance the TL to takeoff power setting / press the TOGA switches), you are deemed to have entered the takeoff phase / roll.

It is irrelevant whether the actual EPR has been achieved or what the speed of the aircraft is.

On the ICAO / CAST page there is no definition of Discontinued Takeoff.
