CAAC ATPL holders and aircraft ferrying

I just left because of the ban on commuting. Airline is refusing to "release" me unless I pay for all training (incredible, I know). I am unlikely to ever get a release letter from them because of this. It is often said that a Chinese airline "owns" ones license and you cannot get a job else where until they have done that. My question is, am I still allowed to ferry Chinese registered aircraft even though my airline has not released me? A ferry opportunity doesn't count as a job in my book, I'd be operating as a freelancer. Any thoughts/experience of this?
