To your knowledge, has this company publicly admitted their difficulty staffing the airline to the media and shareholders(if there are any) ? I suspect they might be reluctant to admit that.

Difficulty because they insist on 3000 hours total and 1000 jet hours just for an FO.
These are the mins for Hong Kong Express. I think they even pay more than jetstar.
  • Minimum 1,000 hours of which 500 hours must be on an aircraft with a maximum certificated takeoff weight of more than 5,670kg driven by turbines, and used for commercial aviation or
  • Minimum 1,000 hours of which 500 hours on corporate jet; or
  • Minimum 2,000 hours of which 500 hours on civil registered transport aircraft certificated for multi-crew operations
  • Holder of a valid Multi-Engine ICAO CPL (gained without exemptions)
Now HKE may not be the best company but they are realistic with mins for employment

Huge different between passing a Japanese ATPL course and a course with HKE.

The minimums are high because its possible to be upgraded in just over three years if everything falls into place.

Recruiting minimums and standards are set by the JCAB for non designated air carrier status airlines in Japan

To the Dominican - all airframes currency utilised. No lack of FOs, shortage of Captains. Package includes housing and commuting for expats, so your post on costs of getting to Narita is not relevant.

Company apartment provided in Kozinomori during training.

With 3000TT and 1000 jet 3 years isn't a quick upgrade. If you have 1000 hours jet then 12-18 months in the bus is more than enough. If you are competant.

But if that's the rules then bad luck for jetstar

I seriously doubt an Expat FO has been able to upgrade in just over 3 years, let alone EVER at JJP. Don’t give false hopes of ever upgrading to Expats heading there because even just passing FO training there is against the odds.

How about sharing all the recent Initial Pass/Fail Rates for Expat Captain’s and FO’s? My guess is around 30%, and that is being generous.

All airframes being utilized? Honto? So are there not any planes consistently parked over by the hangars near the 34L? How about all the Flight cancellations due to shortage of pilots?

This is comical! Please put down the Green-Tea flavored Kool-Aid and come back to reality!

Nearest International School will be in Yokohama (on the opposite side of Tokyo) and it won’t be cheap.

Living in Japan as Expat will be extremely challenging and will require support from your Company while there to help you get set-up and be a Guarantor for your Housing, which I seriously doubt you will get from JJP.

Many international schools in downtown Tokyo. No need to go to Yokohama

Nearest is actually in Chiba. Makuhari International School. Some JJP guys have their kids there already I heard.

Hey tgo15,

It really depends on what kind of life style you want in Japan.
Living in the middle of Tokyo can be really expensive. Decent 2-3 bed room apartment cost 200,000-300,000 jpy.
And many people in Tokyo don't even own cars because parking costs about 30,000-50,000 jpy.

Living near Narita could reduce cost of living to 1/3 of Tokyo and you can easily own a car.
But Narita is far from Tokyo and might feel bored if you are city kinda guy.

I would personally suggest near Kaihin Makuhari area which is between Narita and Tokyo with good mixture of city and relaxed life style.
There is also a international school. There is also a direct bus to Narita which takes about 40 mins non-stop.
Town itself is very safe and clean. Cost of living would be aprox half of center of Tokyo.

Don't even think about Yokohama. Commuting to Narita will take almost 2 hours although the city is very nice.

Sitting in a restaurant with a friend who works for JJP and showing him this thread.

His two cents: probably the shortest training of all the Japanese companies for rated, expat DEC-s. No expat FO-s have been upgraded, yet. Some are in the works but the results are yet to be seen.

No airframes on the ground, however flights have been cancelled during busy seasons due to lack of crew - it is already included in the 83% of OTP for the last year or so.

Failure rate of the usual suspects is high due to the "...but in my previous company..." attitude. Guys who are humble and understanding towards the sensitivities of the Japanese culture combined with a great attitude didn't have problems passing.

It would be very interesting to know wether the new advertised roster of 16on/14off is actually being offered and enjoyed by people working there. Or if this is just being used as bait for people to join.
Is this for real? (if yes) Wondering if it will last..
And if it is real, will you be able to do it/arrange it throughout the year as an agreement with the scheduling department?

They know that this is offered at other operators in Japan and they need more than just attract pilots, they need to keep them. If they start messing around with the contract like that people will just take their type and their 500 hours and tell them to pound sand. I don’t think they will do that, now about the training and checking culture, that’s a whole different topic.

Good day, is it true that training takes up to 9 months and is very tough?
Could you also advise on what kind of net salary can be expected?

Also how tough is the training. Is it a friendly atmosphere?? Or they go for expats?

Training is truly and utterly horrible according to some who had qualified last year, however flying on the line is a bliss. Easy ops, and good commuting.

Unfortunately there is a high failure rate during initial training/checking - the real problem with it is that most of the candidates lost their currency in other parts of the World by the time they through all the hoops of groundschool and sims to attend the licence proficiency check during which there is an actual 30-40% failure rate.

Money is okay...expect around 1.2-1.3m yen pm once on the line, plus bonuses and occasional tax returns. 900k during training. 20/10 roster is only avail once passed the company line check - and boy, that won't happen for at least 5-6 months from start...

For the guys who PM-ed me: I can’t answer as I’m new here on pprune (must be something to do with building up history before being able to use PM), however since I do not work for Jetstar Japan, I can only pass on info what I’ve heard from my buddies working over there.

There are a number of pilots like myself who hold JCAB licences. Perhaps Jetstar should offer them Oz seniority numbers as an incentive to apply. Also perhaps those with both JCAB and A320 be offered more than the JPY 2,000,000.

My two cents worth.

Just find it's interesting you (apparently) think J*J is part of the Jetstar group.

The locals running the show probably have a very different opinion on that - and manage/dictate accordingly.

Some agencies are saying Australian pilots do get an Australian seniority number now. They actually say fly in Japan and then return to Aus as a direct entry captain. That last bit is a little far fetched though I think.
