IBEX Airlines

Hi all

I am considering a move to IBEX and would like some constructive feedback from anybody who has worked there recently or is currently working there.

I have done a search on this forum and the only hits I got are a bit outdated.

Also, on a more general basis, any info regarding life in Japan (Sendai) would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
dd

Have been at IBEX for a little over 6 years... The Company is a Good Small Company and has a GREAT Flight Ops Management... We Currently have 7 CRJ-700s, 2 CRJ-200 and 1 CRJ-100... Currently there are 10 Expat Captains online and 6 starting next week... All the F/Os are Japanese...

The Training is good but LONG... Not difficult but requires the "right" attitude and the ability to adapt to a New Method of doing things... Training is done in Haneda/Tokyo and Sendai...

Base is Sendai which is 150NM north of Tokyo... City is nice, clean and safe... People are kind and pleasant... International School is good and all who attend are happy...

For more details go to www.airlinepilotcentral.com and check the hiring news... there is a CRJ wanted thread that has a discussion on IBEX... There has been 2 contract changes since the thread was started so some of the pay details are out dated...

PM me if you have specific questions... One of the SA Express guys are starting with us next week...

They are now accepting other jet CAs like e175 CA and i think at one time they were accepting dash 8 captains but not sure anymore. Might want to check with Rish or TWI about that though.

I didn't see the >40T requirement. I see that TWI lists it as >40,000 MTOW and Rishworth shows >20T.

Hey Guys

The only way to apply to Ibex is thru one of the 3 agencies... Rishworth, TWI Avn or IAC...

Currently have 5 expats in class... Last interview was in Aug, will start 4 Type Rated guys in Nov 2015... Nov 2015 screening now in question...

Where as they have advertised for NTR Jet Captains they have ONLY hired Type Rated... If they do have a screening in Nov I suspect it will be only for Type Rated Captains... They had advertised for NTR Turboprop guys a while back however the JCAB nicked that program... So only JCAB ATPL holders can transition from Turboprop to Jet at Ibex... From what I have gathered that holds true at the other Japanese Carriers...

Ibex is a good Company with Great Flt Ops Management... Nice working environment with good people and well maintained aircraft... Terms and Conditions are okay with a good QOL...

If you are a experienced CRJ Captain give Ibex a look... Water is fine come on in...

A couple questions about IBEX.

What is the training and conversion process like for a US CRJ driver? (Type rated and experienced)

The 10 days off in a month, or 20 in 2 months for commuters, is that just a minimum? Do you often get more?

Can you change up where you commute from? Go to New Zealand one month, and Europe the next or whatever?

Thanks!

Hey DDC

IBEX does their own inhouse training for the expat/TF transitions... Training footprint looks alittle like this... Arrive Japan, do the Airlaw, Radio, ground school at the ANA school house to get prepped for the 2 written exams that are required... Take said exams and then follow on CRM/ WX/ and a few more misc classes non-testable... About 1 month in HND/Tokyo... To Sendai for Company Indoc/ OM/ Sys CBT/ Intergration... About 1 month... To HND for sim... FSI sim with IBX instructors... JCAB Check with IBX Checker JCAB observed for intial/JCAB ATPL & type... 1 month... Back to Sendai for OJT/ OE... Not sure of current number of sectors required these days, about 60-80 then a JCAB observed line check... 2 months... Intial training complete normally 6-7 months... Yeah I know long but just the way it rolls, might get lucky and get it done quicker but plan on 6-7 for your mental health...

Days off are 10 for Non-commuting and 20 every 2 months for commuters... Forget the USA bid system... This is Japan... You will get some "BD" blank days which are duty free days for rest requirements... They have added two BD for commuters for jetlag recovery so after your 20 block days off on your return you will have 2 BD... Non commuters also get a single BD during the month so basicly you will be free of duty 11 days per month...

For commuters you are paid a "Commuting Allowance" each month... You arrange and pay for your own transportation to and from where you choose to commute to... Want to go to Europe this break, enjoy... Oz the next break, enjoy... Thailand next break, ENJOY... Want to hang in J-land, no problem... Allowance is paid no tickets/ receipts required except for reimbersement of train tickets to/from HND/NRT...

Hope this answers your questions... Currently there a 3 Crew Lease companies... TWI Aviation is under new Management/ Ownership and is the Best Agency to go with now... Really Good service and they handle ALL the issues and make J-land easy... There is a thread at Airlinepilotcentral under Hiring titled CRJ Pilots wanted Japan I think which address many questions... T&C have changed since the tread was started so disregard those as listed...

The Company is good... Excellent mx... Great people and good Management... Expat/ TF Captains are treated well and there are no issues... Any other questions post or PM...

Hey Guys and Gals

IBEX will be screening CRJ Captains 26/27 August... Screening is a one day event held in Tokyo/HND at the Flight Safety Intl sim building at HND... Start date is est 11 Nov 2019... Screening consist of a Panel Interview and a sim check in a FSI CRJ-700 sim... Transport to and from the Screening and hotel in HND covered by the company...

To apply, 3 Crew Lease Companies offering the T&C... TWI Aviation (a Longreach Company) Rishworth and IAC... IMHO TWI Aviation under the new Management is the best choice!!! Hands down... Easy access to Lease companies links are at pilotpointer.com ...

There is a lengthy thread at airlinepilotcentral.com under Hiring news titled CRJ pilots wanted Japan... Most info is current except for the T&C which has been enhanced since started...

Any questions please post or PM...

The Company is still a good place to work... Good Management, Aircraft, QOL with GREAT people...

Hi Folks

There was a PM asking what schedules looked like and thought anybody else looking may have that question too...

The summer schedule has 1 day trips, 3 day trips and 4 day trips... So if the Company is properly staffed you can expect a mix of trips including a couple of standby days... Commuters can expect 5 days on followed by a BD/Blank day which is a duty free day... 10 block days off and most people will take the end/front of 2 months to have a 20 day block of days off and on return you get 2 BD for jetlag recovery... Non-commuters will get 10 days off and a BD... You can request days off but there is no bid system for trips... They try to spread the good and bad throughout the group and there really is no type of seniority system... If you have a preference you may request that with the scheduler and they may be able to grant said request... If there is a special family issue the schedulers really work hard to make those days available... Expect 10 nights away from home per month...

The route system has many airports that close early in the evening so no overnite flying... Earliest Takeoff is 0715 and latest scheduled landing 2130... A couple of the trips do have 5 legs in a single day, other than those two days the rest are from 2-4 legs per day... Max legs/landing per OM is 6... All flying is Domestic Japan... Due to this reason all Expats will have resident card regardless of Commuting or Non-commuting Contract...

Any other questions please post or PM...

crjdriver,

Thanks for all the solid gouge. Was doing some research for the future and saw Ibex which, from the nature of the job and your posts, look interesting, fun, and provides a good place to start out in Japan.

Noticed there were some large issues posted around 2009-ish. From what I could read between the lines, it was apparently from a mixture of bad attitude from the expat mixed with old-school Japanese pilots in positions of authority (apparently can't post links to threads, but thread titles below). Particularly concerning was from goneagain, who claimed that if you angered someone in the airline, you'd never hear of it, you'd just fail your next checkride. The second thread seems to reinforce his position, where nihon_nightmare claims a check captain set up a JCAB check for failure. Do you have any experience/knowledge of this time period? It seems like your experience has been much more positive, so I'm guessing it was either bad expat attitude or a/some local(s) who have since left the company.

I'm not too worried about attitude, I'm used to shutting up and coloring as long as safety isn't compromised. If it's an atmosphere where there's a faction that actively does not want foreigners, that's more concerning.

Thank you and all the other people who've posted copious gouge on the area and companies - Frate, Dom, jrmyl, and everyone else.

Hi Rubrum

Yeah I remember reading those threads... That was before my time here, however I did know some of the first Expats at IBEX that I flew with in OZ at Kendall... The big complaint then was no self checking so every check JCAB...

I will stand by my previous post... Current Management is excellent... VP Flt Ops Ibex guy... Sr VP Corp Safety retired ANA but Ibex VP Flt Ops 10 years... Chief pilot Ibex... Chief Checker Ibex... Assistant Chief pilot ANA TDY, Checker ANA TDY... ALL great people very fair and approachable...

Attitude is EVERYTHING in Japan... IBEX is a small company so it is even more important because everybody knows everybody...

Checkers are fair and call "strikes and balls" no corners... Checks are just that no ambushes... If some one has a "attitude" issue it will be addressed as just that... If it is a Expat then the Expat Manager will address the issue and try and bring said person into the fold... Then Japanese management will evaluate the progress... It has been a issue in the past and a pilot was released prior to completing training... Another pilot came inline and completed his contract and returned to his Legacy Carrier with a stash of cash... If a pilot comes and does the job as posted no issues... Really pretty easy...

Hope that answers that question... Going to post this part because lost a longer post due to slow typing...

Hi Rubrun

To continue the post to yours... Ibex is a good little Company the T&Cs are a little lite however it is a "Net" of all Japanese taxes so depending on your Nation of Origin the tax advantages may inhance the real value...

We have a good group of Expats, 9 of 35 Captains at Ibex... Countries of Origin, Canada/ USA/ Spain/ Sweeden/ South Africa/ Mali... Other Alumni include Scotland/ Swiss/ Oz/ Mexico... If you are a CRJ guy and want a good QOL with NO all nite flying/ good A/C with excellent mx/ clean and safe small city living Ibex may be a place for you....

If looking at your future after Ibex the Boeing or the Bus may be the answer... If you stay at Ibex each Contract renewal has a small pay pack increase... We have had 12 former guys go to SKY/ Peach/ Vanilla/ Spring Japan as NTR DECs... 10 were Successful, 2 were not due mostly to a lack of effort or bad pairing... 2 finished their Vanilla contract and now are NTR DEC at Air Japan... If you want to go to Air Japan then you would be best suited to go direct there as a F/O and upgrade, we had one person do that too after a Contract years ago...

life is all about what is best for the individual one size does not fit all... Best of luck in choosing a path to venture down... If I can answer any other questions please post or PM me...

We will have 3 Expats starting in Nov and should add 2 in 2020...

Hey 80's

yeah you are correct the Companies that now do "Direct Contracts" take direct applications... Believe that to be Peach, Spring Japan, Jetstar Japan and Air Asia Japan... Ibex, Skymark, Solaseed and Air Japan still work thru Agencies... ANA WIngs currently at last check had no expats but the last offering was thru a direct contract...

Thanks for the input and helping to keep the current info flowing for those interested...

Hey Guys & Gals

Any CRJ drivers interested in coming to Japan IBEX will be conducting screenings mid Dec 2019 exact date to be determined... Start date is estimated to be 9 Mar 2020... Screening will be held at the FSI Sim building at HND...

Company is still a good place to work and Sendai is a nice city to reside... The Agencies still offering the T&C are TWI Avn, Rishworth, IAC Global... I would recommend TWI Avn, my 10 yen worth there...

Previous post by me remain correct except for the T&Cs numbers... At APC/airlinepilotcentral there is a thread under the Hiring banner that address questions and comments about IBEX that may be of interest or helpful...

If I can answer any questions please post or PM me...
