NCA 744F
Have applied for a job for NCA through Hawaii Aviation. Anyone have any feedback? Cant find anything one what the pay is for F/O's? I have heard its similar to AJX 767 F/O package. Any help appreciated

NCA not hiring at the moment. That's an old job post...check the start date more closely (over 2 years ago).

There's a reason why they're hiring, and its not cause their growing. Fleet/routes have shrunk, around 25% of last group of newbies have left before end of first contract, and the contract on offer now is around $2000 less a month than old first officers started on. Scheduling/days off/pay/allowances/upgrades/politics/favoritism - take your pick - any are good reasons not to go there.

Im with six7 there CW please elaborate on what the issues are at the moment as i was also under the impression this was a good gig to have?

Hi,
Thank u for the given infos so far.
Im currently flying the 744, but i barely full fill the required minimums in terms of hours. You guys think I have a chance for an inviation(3000 and a bit hours)?
Does anyone know if there will be further screenings, except for the mentioned one in September?

six7: You're right: this used to be the cream of contracts but that was in the old days when ANA ran the show. Now there's a rag-bag group of managers from outside and 20 yr old new grads in their first real job who act like this is a school project to them, but they have serious influence over your QOL.
Re Don Julio's post: mostly right, except for upgrade policy. There are 2 seniority lists, one for locals and one for all others. The upgrade for locals is guaranteed as soon as they have the required hours or New joining local pilots with good experience apparently have a guaranteed upgrade after 18 months. For guys on the western seniority list, the upgrade is around 10-12 years, and will likely get longer as they contract the business and lose charters due to rookie mistakes.
Also, being on the western SL, you'll be used in place of local pilots. eg they need a duty pilot for sim - they will DH you from USA or Europe then put you in sim the next morning to avoid inconveniencing the local pilot on one of his standby days. Need a stooge to put in the sim for a JCAB spot check - always send a western guy half way round the world for a potentially career-altering check instead of using a local guy who lives an hour away and is adjusted to local time.
If you want to come here, dont do it for the upgrade or the worthless 747 rating. PM me if you have a specific question

And with regards to doing sim duty, you don't get paid as it isn't counted towards your flight hours BTW, so NCA thanks you for your volunteer work and commitment to them.

At EK we don't get paid for sim duty either, or ground training, or "distance learning" a euphemism for working at home on your days off. Is it just me or do you really need to do volunteer work for a company that makes profits in excess of 1 billion dollars a year?

A lot of companies in Japan don't pay you for simulator duty either, such as recurrent training or your check, but the point I was trying to make was referring to what Captain Wilbur stated, is that NCA will fly you, a Foreign Devil from your base in either Europe or the USA to Narita to fill in for seat support for a person that is undergoing recurrent training or a check. It's not even your training. Or they will just assign it to you during one of your layover's in Narita and this is isn't a random event once in a while, it happens often sometimes monthly to which you are not compensated for. IMHO, it's not my job to sit in the simulator to provide seat support for someone and not be compensated for it.

The Japanese company I work for will use you for sim support on a day that belongs to the company, i.e. not one of your contractual days off. There is no credit towards overtime for sim, though we hardly ever get to overtime hours here.
I believe NCA would be the same, though I don't think they have an overtime system.
As it is done on a working day, we are effectively paid for sim.

Yes, Blank Day's are considered the company's day and I have no problems with being assigned flight duty on those days (as is the general consensus and purpose of those day's), not seat support or fill-in duty for people undergoing recurrent training or check rides. Two previous companies I have worked for have tried this $#@! and we simply refused the duty until they eventually got the message and stopped trying to assign this BS. One company went so far as trying to make us go into the office and selfstudy on our Blank Days during office hours or make us come in if we had a partial flight duty day in order to get a full 8 hours of work in (lunch excluded). The answer was simple, we all refused it and if it boiled down to it, we would quit, so we stood our ground, and then management backed off and that was the end of that. I have been in Japan for well over a decade and the bottom line is this: You have to stand up for yourself and draw the line (respectfully), otherwise, they will keep pushing and pushing and not respect you at all. It gets a bit tricky being in the contract world as we are all on individual contracts, hence it's more important than ever to have the right people in place serving in the role of Chief Pilot, etc, but you still have stand your ground as an individual and have some self-respect and professionalism.
