Seek help from AirAsia on saving MAS, DAP tells Putrajaya

HAHA.. this is going down hill.. if the government can fix it problems..

Seek help from AirAsia on saving MAS, DAP tells Putrajaya

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein should "put aside egos" and seek AirAsia founder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes's expertise to help save ailing national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS), DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.

Lim said MAS's more than RM4.1 billion in losses in the past three years should prompt its owners, Khazanah Nasional, to seek solutions by coming to terms with the fact that its current cost structure is just not viable.

"Khazanah must come up with a concrete plan to rescue MAS, which must include the adoption of international practices of open competitive tenders and performance-based assessment for all workers, including top management," said Lim, who lamented the absence of any "turnaround plan" for MAS.

"MAS may think that the losses are sustainable because it still has a cash balance of RM3.9 billion at the end of last year but it is irresponsible, if not suicidal, to continue with the 'business as usual' attitude," he said in a statement.

Hishammuddin and Fernandes recently engaged each other on Twitter after the latter complained about the delay and cost of the new budget carrier airport.

Lim, who is the Penang chief minister, also warned of competition from new budget carrier Malindo Air.

Saying his party does not agree with a suggestion by Singapore Business Times that MAS should declare bankruptcy to revive itself, Lim, however, drew attention to "overstaffing and lopsided procurement contracts from maintenance to catering".

"No one is surprised that cronyism and hanky-panky are two of the main causes of MAS' continued decline," he added, while saying that MAS still could not compete with AirAsia despite tens of billions of ringgit from taxpayers.

In contrast, Lim said AirAsia was a success story despite not getting public funds.

He said the cost overruns in the klia2 project showed that the Transport Ministry was clueless.

The project has come under scrutiny from the opposition after its initial cost of RM1.6 billion was revised to RM4 billion, as well as delays.

"Fernandes had pointedly said the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang only costs RM250 million, a pittance compared with klia2's RM4 billion price tag.

"If the ministry does not accept his expertise, it is at MAS' loss," added Lim.

Last week, MAS reported its fourth straight quarterly loss for 2013 and chalked up RM1.17 billion in losses for the year – three times as much as in 2012.

Right on the money JetJockey. Didn't they try this once before? What a joke!! The reason that MAS is losing money is so obvious, and has been stated over and over again: they are saddled with incredibly uncompetitive contracts, and with many thousands too many useless employees in a gov't led, make-work project.

The Fat Man, who many times has stated that he "hates competition" would love to come in and turn MAS into an international only airline, thus giving him and his minions free rein to 'own' the Malaysian routes. But then again, maybe he is too busy getting rolled over in India and Japan to have much time to do anything at home.

The last time he was brought in to be the savior of MAS, the only thing that happened was that Firefly Jets was shut down at his insistence, thus ridding his dream team airline of any serious low-cost competition. MAS will never change, because despite the lip service in Putrajaya being paid to the airline's losses, too many Datos have millions being funneled to them from MAS to seriously change anything.

AirAsia X orders 25 more A330-300s

I guess.. the government is booty blind by this order.. or the booty of TF... hahaha... Learn from him, not to pay outstanding charges to airport authority,, etc.... Want to learn something.. bring back CEO Idris Jala ... aleast MAS was in the black with him for a while... But I guess he touch a nerve and he was expelled...

AirAsia X orders 25 more A330-300s

AirAsia X, the long haul affiliate of the AirAsia Group, has placed a firm order with Airbus for 25 more A330-300s. The contract is the largest A330 order received by Airbus in a single purchase agreement and increases the carrier’s total firm orders for the type to 51. These will be supplemented by another six A330-300s leased from International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC).

The contract was signed in Paris by Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X and Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO, Airbus, witnessed by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Co-founder and Director of AirAsia X.

AirAsia X will start taking delivery of its newly-ordered A330-300s in 2015 as it begins a major expansion of its network across the Asia-Pacific region. The new order includes the latest extended range versions of the A330-300, providing the carrier with the ability to offer non-stop service to destinations in Europe or one-stop service to the US.

Tan Sri’ Tony Fernandes, Co-Founder and Director of AirAsia X said, “This order stamps our firm intent to dominate the long-haul, low cost carrier space and marks the next phase in our development to be the undisputed global market leader. Our commitment would allow us to remain as the youngest wide body fleet age in the region at under five years throughout 2019, with corresponding competitive fuel efficiency, reliability and cabin comfort benefits.”

“The aircraft orders would further cater to our expansion plans in Malaysia, and the proposed new Thai AirAsia X hub as well as other long-haul ventures planned across Asia. The developments will complement the AirAsia Group’s long-term vision of developing its presence in key markets in Asia and strengthen the connectivity between long-haul and short-haul low-cost network.”

“AirAsia X has proven that it is possible to build a highly successful low cost long haul business,” said Fabrice Brégier President and CEO, Airbus. “And the A330 is the perfect platform for such operations, with the lowest operating costs, true long range flying capability and a proven track record of exceptional technical reliability. We look forward to working with AirAsia X as it continues to innovate in the low cost long haul market.”

AirAsia X currently operates 16 A330-300s on services linking its Kuala Lumpur base to destinations in Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific. In addition to A330s, the carrier also has 10 A350-XWB aircraft on order for future delivery.

The latest order from AirAsia X further consolidates the position of the AirAsia Group as one of Airbus’s largest airline customers in the world. In total the Group has now ordered 536 aircraft from the manufacturer. These include 475 A320 Family single aisle aircraft for AirAsia’s short haul operations based out of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila, plus the 51 A330s and 10 A350 XWBs for AirAsia X.
