I am very curious to know where they got their Capts from.
There are plenty of ex Firefly B738 capt who were rejected by MAS when Firefly's jet ops was canceled by Fat Dandy. There are a few also from Air Asia/Maswings as well as MAS who would like to jump ship and start a new life in a new company. After all Malindo's financial package is almost identical to Air Asia, which is certainly better than MAS narrow body capt.

SZB Congestion (Foreseen)

SZB is witnessing a steady growth of air traffic movement over the past few years. The movement into/out of SZB for 2012 was 74,000+ with a further growth expected for 2013. Additional operators (remember...there's a new kid in town called Malindo who will be frequenting SZB soon for maintenance etc etc) are in the cards to add to the already congested airspace of 40nm within SZB & KLIA. SZB has no SIDs or STARs except for assigned radar headings. We also have to take care of our brothers and sisters who are learning how to fly a plane (the piston engined guys). ATC foresees unexpected delays in the 2nd quarter of 2013 onwards at SZB. With the south west monsoon moving in, the prefered RWY at KLIA will be R14 which means SZB traffic can expect delays or slot departures. Plan your schedule. ATC is in the midst of drawing SIDs and STARs for SZB. With the new routes you will experience more fuel to be burnt for the SZB guys. Remember, KLIA is the priority airfield, SZB is secondary for ATC.

Thanks for the heads up Vello, good to hear from you, i guess thats why even with a tailwind averaging 5 - 8 kts we are still landing on 32. When do you think we will start using rwy 14.

RWY14

Probably next month or wind becomes constant 10kts or more for 32.
Yesterday we used 14 bcos of r33 calibration at SZB.

SZB Congestion

To Firefly and Malindo....
It will be good if you both sit down and look
into each others schedule before embarking
on your schedules in the coming months.
ATC is trying its best to keep RT & Coordination (between SZB TWR& Approach)
as low as possible out of SZB until new SIDs and STARs
for SZB is finalised. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
P/s Berjaya is also observed to be increasing its flights
out of SZB. Help us to help you.

ATIS KUL and SZB

Hi Veloo, sorry for a bit out of topic. I want to highlight this issue for quite some time. Why ATIS KUL and SZB not updated on time? Most of the airports the ATIS will be updated exactly or one to two minutes pass the 00/30 minute. For example if I tune to Hong Kong's ATIS freq at 0103 UTC I will get the latest weather. But not at KUL and SZB. Imagine we need to tune multiple times to ATIS frequency just to get the latest weather update while we are doing an approach. This is a flight safety hazard as both pilots are needed to concentrate on flying and monitor RT during this crictical part of flight.

OFF TOPIC

Hi Veloo,

Since SCT quoted HKG as an example with regard to ATIS, don't you think it is high time for KUL ATC to go one step further by providing DATIS and probably have a dedicated phone line for the ATIS itself, broadcasting continuously, so that the crew who are operating short sectors like PEN-KUL or JHB-KUL could instantly get the info well before their dep.

e.g. In HKG, ATC had put up 2 dedicated phone lines for ATIS:

- Arr ATIS : +852-314 12820
- Dep ATIS : +852-314 12705

Please note that the last 5 digits of the phone numbers are actually the VHF frequencies itself ( Arr freq - 128.2 and dep freq - 127.05). How clever it is....

I have not talked about ATC clearance via ACARS yet but that is a different story.

Cheers

KUL/SZB ATIS

SCT&VR...goodday.
As for KUL, I was told, met office sends weather data to tower thru some digital link.
an alarm is triggered in the tower and the Ctler in charge for weather inputs has to manually feed in the data into another system (which is totally independent from the weather dept.) Then it goes on the air via a digital voice.
If the met office delays 5 mins you wud probably get it 10 mins later ( i guess).
As for SZB, the methodology seems to be a bit better.
The met office feeds the data directly into the ATIS system. Then again if he/she (the met officer) delays 10mins, it will be just like KUL.
VR....thanks for your suggestion...will forward to the Pengarah KLIA Tower (to prepare a budget paper).
FYI even the ATCC gets the weather in a delayed manner . Sometimes the pilots tell us the latest QNH to us. What are friends for!!

Anyone knows what is the payscale like? Captain's basic, hourly rate, co-pilot basic, hourly rate? Do they pay 737 and ATR captains the same?

4 atr and 6 boeing 737 by October 2013.
