MH653 Tanjung Kupang

My father as a passenger was killed on flight MH653 I'm looking to visit the memorial site as it will be 35 years this year! I have never been before.

Does anyone know if other family members of the victims go regularly on the actual day, do they hold a service of some kind or what is the procedure?

I am new to all of this so any help, advice would be welcome

Angel The Tragedy of Flight MH653

And no comments I guess nobody is interested anymore.

I now know there is more to this tragedy than we were ever told, I have read everyones comments on the why's & wherefores and I totally agree this needs closure and we all need the truth!

For to long To many innocent peoples families have suffered! Fathers, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, Sons, Daughters, friends and colleagues and why? Because of greed and corruption????

It's never to late to put something right, only the people on board that fateful flight witnessed what happened and what fear must they have gone through! I'm guessing there are still peolpe alive that know more than we do!
So yes it's time to - Let the Truth come out, Let the innocent victims souls rest in peace and Let the families find closure.
I guess to some this happened a long time ago and it's old news but believe me to us it's still like it was yesterday!

The events of that day are as clear now as they were nearly 35 years ago! I was standing in my kitchen just before leaving for work when I heard the news on the radio...... I froze on the spot and I knew then in my heart Dad was never coming home!!!!!
No internet or emails in those days.......It took hours of phone calls and waiting until finally confirmed.

The events of that day will stay with me forever!

Malaysia airlines normally has a small gathering and memorial service at subang airport on the anniversary of the unfortunate crash.

try and get in touch with their 5 star service team and see if they can set you up with a invite.

my condolence to you. my dad was supposed to be on that flight, but his mother demanded he be around for some occasion.

Belated condolences and best wishes to you and your family.

There is a memorial called the Tanjung Kupang Memorial located at Jalan Kebun Teh in Johor Baru city in the state of Johor on the southern edge of Peninsula Malaysia.

You can travel to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, then take a domestic flight to Johor Baru. Taxis are easily available from Sultan Ismail airport in Senai ( where Johor Baru airport is ) to the memorial. Altenatively, you can come via Singapore using bus services from Changi airport to Johor Baru city, then via taxi to the memorial.

For more info, you can google " Tanjung Kupang Memorial ". However the stories weaved in the wikipaedia entries should be taken with a big spoonful of salt.

Good luck and best wishes again.

Tanjung Kupang Memorial
The monument stands within a quiet alcove on a grassy knoll located between an established school, SJKC Foon Yew ( Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Foon Yew - ie Foon Yew National Type Chinese School ) and a housing estate known as Taman Majidee. There are many tall pine trees at this location. The road, Jalan Kebun Teh is a busy road due to the location of the popular school.

Hope this info helps. Best wishes and Godspeed on your quest to honour your gramps.

Best to contact MAS PR department. They should be able to help. Best of luck.

Memorial Site - MH 653

I think I am the most frequent visitor to this Memorial Site Been visiting and dropping by since 1979. I am the bloke who glided the names inscriptions when I overheard a visiting relative ( from Indonesia ) lamenting about the poor maintenance to a MAS Rep ( Caren Lee ) back 2012. So I told them that I shall gild the inscriptions as a mark of respects. Today, as usual, I went over to recite my usual prayer for all but to my dismay, MAS didn't even send a stalk of flower ! I called Caren but she told me that the Top Management has assigned this task to another team. She also told me that she will bring this matter up to HQ

I used to grow up in the area where the monument is.

Until recently when the corporate HQ for Malaysia Airlines shifted to Kuala Lumpur Intl Airport, a short memorial was held on the anniversary of the event. I seem to remember it being held in front of the admin bldg 4, complex B.

Don't know if this practice continued at the new HQ but its doubtful as it looks like management wants a clean break from the past.

Pic of the memorial attached.

I used to stay in the vicinity in the 70s and dragged my girlfriend (wife now) in the evening just to sit around there. I do not know any of the victims but there was one lady who has "contacted and communicated" with me on numerous times all these years. I considered her as my Angel of Whip. I once "begged" to see her face. She did showed up in a full black and white portrait in my house's incense's table. Last week I skipped the annual visitation........
