Hainan Airlines Interview Info
Hi All,
Firstly, I have searched and read all the info on Hainan Airlines and the living conditions and treatment of expats by the Chinese. I know 3rd world living and the way people get treated so I am well aware of what is in store for me. Unfortunately, if you can make it through the selection process and get a contract, it will be a stepping stone in the right direction (a very warped stepping stone but one none-the-less).
What I would like to ask for is information regarding the Interview - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely not true!
There might be discussions about the interpretation of the contract.
I finished my flying career and have no need to sweettalk any deal but concerning my three years with Hainan I treated them fairly and got the same in return. I might have had the advantage of beeing employed by another chines airline before Hainan so I was already used to the logic of the chinese mind.
No regrets about my last three years. There are better contracts out there but definitely worse. And I got my salary and bonus always on time.

Which fleet are you applying with Hainan?
For anything other than the 767, I would apply to a different Chinese airline than Hainan. I just jumpseated a couple of weeks ago on them and talked to a couple of their pilots. Their line training has not gotten better in the last 2 years, it has gotten worse. Maybe far worse. 2 years ago it was 6-8 months of line training for current and qualified pilots.
For the 330 I would do Sichuan first. I don't know enough about working for either Air China or China Southern to give them a thumbs up or down. Obviously if you want to commute those might be attractive.
320 I would do BCA, TIanjin, Sichuan, Shenzhen, Spring. Not necessarily in that order. Avoid June Yao and West Air.
737 Probably I would do Xiamen or Shenzhen first. I don't know about OK. I would still avoid Hainan. Xiamen and Shenzhen are two of the best places to live in China.
Most importantly I wouldn't recommend any Chinese job unless you have a guaranteed job to go back to. The money is great now but the job security is not.
Finished a 2 year contract 2 weeks ago and am trying to avoid going back, but my bank account is calling my name..........

I am going to interview with China Southern in August.
Can anyone confirm or refute the rumours about the intensive flight working in overall China? Are their pilots really fly more 100 hours per month?

Hainan Air just got busted by the CAAC recently for getting caught flying their pilots overtime. Reduction in flying, no AC deliveries etc. I don't know the details.
The Chinese cheat at everything, all the time. It is just a matter if they get caught, and if it affects you. It did affect me.

Several cabin and cockpitcrews did not adhere to the minimum 36 h uninterrupted rest in a certain timeframe (7days moving bracket)
CAAC grounded the flighhtcrew for up to two months and imposed a cashfine on Hainan. They also had to reduce their flight hours in their system by ?(15)% and could not take any new aircraft in this fiscal year.
But: as the employees had done these transgressions on behalf and in the interest of Hainan the y got fully paid during these penalty months.
So, its a power struggle between CAAC and the biggest " private" airline in China and sometimes you got caught in between. Whenever they wanted me to fly something close to CAAC limits I asked them to give me in writing that this sector/duty or resttime was according regulations. Hardly ever I had to take it ;-)
Cheating? Well, crewcontrol all over the world try to catch you unaware, its not a chinese syndrom.

Dear Collegues,
I would like to share a part of my experience with Hainan Airlines that could be interesting to know before applying for that company.
It makes now more than 2 years that I passed successfully the Hainan's screening for the CCQ A320-A330 contract, since than, I had to face a lot of incredible delays of any sort: medical check, expert certificate, resident permit, ...
Finally after those 2 years of unconfortable standby, I reported to the fleet and thought I was about to be released on line after a typically 2 month training period as stipulated in my contract.
I was about to have gathered the training hours needed for the line check when they decided to add some extra sim check and line training check to the already heavy set of CAAC, SOP, observer, F/O and line check.
Even more, some Captains that were already released on line have been grounded and are now waiting to have those checks scheduled.
I am now totally convinced that Hainan doesn't need us on the line for the moment and is delaying beyond any expectation the moment to release us as Captain.
In the meantime Hainan is using us as F/O at a rate of F/O.
I wish I could apply for another job but in this long story I lost my recency on A320 and still don't have enough PIC on A330 to convince another employer.

Hi they are offering nice choice on there contract now, they are offering basing to Beijing, Brussels, Berlin, Zurich, and Seattle. Toronto. You can select between 7 days off a month, 10 days off or one month on one off. That look interesting.
Anyone here is working on the 1 month on one off contract?

I left HU in June 2012. At that time I had a 70% parttime contract which guaranteed me 14 days off per month in Europe plus 3 commuting days.
The reason I quit was that I just had enough. But the contract was good.
One of my friends just renewed his 50% parttime job ( 21 days on 40 days off).
Rare as they are these contracts exist and are honoured by HU

Easily explained:
we went for a longhaulcontract and ended up flying domestic sectors (A346) which let you experience frustration beyond belief. On the other hand we were the oddballs as our chinese comrades just could not understand that we did not go after the money of a fulltimecontract. Most FOs got it but the Cpts.. Met nice people and am still in contact with a few of my chinese brethren ( sisters as well...)

one month on one off (21/40):for the chosen few after hard and prolonged and constant harrassing and cajoling from our little group: yes; as far as I know only on the A346
