I'm trying to aquire info concerning how it's like for an european or american to work as a pilot in Indonesia, and Jakarta especially.
A have read a few expat-stories, but non from pilots.
Things like; coruption, is it a day to day problem. Staying healthy,diarea etc..
I have been to Thailand(Bankok,Pattaya). It was ok . But I fear Djakarta, from the stories anyway.
I'm asking because I might go there on a looong contract.

falconetti, excuse me for a slight thread drift - is your Batavia contract going to be on the B737 or A320 ? What are your hours experience ? PM me if you prefer. Thanks.

Like it was said before it is very dependent on how much you need the hours time on type etc. Is it a great place to build a tonne of hours and then move on some where, sure it is. The problem lies in how your going to build your hours and who your going to be dealing with. I've been here for almost a year, been with my current company little over 2 months. There are good companies in Indonesia they are just hard to find. Be weary of the major airliners because they have more to lose, and less care. Corruption is unfortunately a way of life here with very little end in sight. Although prosecution has been brought to some high up politicians, bankers etc it in my opinion is merely to quiet the masses. Jakarta itself will get on your nerves quite quickly, even though it has fantastic malls and some interesting spots to eat and drink. If you are going to live here the suggestion of a motorcycle is a must and also shop around for places to live, unfortunately here there is a common theme of raising the prices to 10x as much for popular foreigner areas. I live in what they call as kost kosan, similar to a college dorm with A/c Wifi Hot water and I pay around 150$ us a month I know many other pilots shoveling out for than 900$! If you do have the hours on type I would personally suggest something along the likes of Lion Air or Air Asia, they tend to get a substantially larger passenger load and still offer the same prices. Be careful have your wits about you and don't take any ****, they will try and screw you ut thats just the nature of the city. I'm in no means coming to the defense of Batavia Airlines, but within indonesia there are alot of problems. Some pilots will work well with one company and bad with another. If your going to indonesia to make a career out of it then yes I'll have to agree batavia isn't an airline to settle down with. That being said there are alot of pilots I know in Batavia, Sriwijaya, Susi air, Lion air, Merpati, Garuda who don't have many complaints about their situation and are content logging some hours and moving on. If you go into those airlines with a stubborn bad attitude they will treat you just as that. Some you will go into with a smile and optimism and they will still treat you terribly its how airlines in general have a tendancy of operating, especially in Indonesia. My suggest is for anyone going to Indonesia to do your homework in person and access everything through your own eyes. Like I said Susi Air is a perfect example of almost pure disregard on the forums yet ex susi pilots of talked to really didn't have alot to complain about. Indonesia is interesting, be ready for anything.

Well said, NG. I know some of the toughest pilots on the earth who left Indo last week immediately after completion of training but there are those who have persevered and stayed to get the valuable hours they need for their logbook. It's a question of attitude (pun certainly not intended).

Also in Jakarta Business magazine it was said that Lion Air was given 4 months to get ride of their horrendous delay times or they were going to face some issues from the government. (not sure what that means or who needs to get paid) If Lion Air starts selling some of their 900ER's they will be able to get their financial situation a little more straightened out seems like a big case of biting off more then they can chew because the Eagle Jet program saved them a tonne of money on flight training.

I heard that someone is staying at a kind of college style dorm but where can the expat stay in Jakarta at reasonable expense?
I note the budget hotels are still pricey on a per monthly basis but then again it's stated that prices rocket for the much sought after areas.

Good Day,
I am 5000 hours tt, 2800 hours jet American who is seeking employment in Jakarta with NEW B737 NG type. I have been to Indonesia numerous times and am familiar with the area.
I am seeking some job referrals to check out in a month or so when I head back to Asia. Any ideas???

Hi ,
Anyone could inform me , wich airlines may accept a direct entry captain on B737 in Indonesia or somewhere else . I have no time PIC , my experience 3500h on B737 NG and 1000h on B777 .
