How does it look for a newly type rated A320 guy out there?

Good Day fellow pilots,

I was wondering what's it like out there in the Indian aviation scene for a low timer and newly type rated A320 guy. I finally decided to go the self sponsored route and I understand many folks out here have said that's a bad idea but I had a lot at stake so decided to bite the bullet. So please spare the sarcasm, and share any info you could that could potentially help me and others in a similar situation.

It would be Greatly appreciated!

Indigo's website says they are hiring type rated A320 pilots

Junior Co-Pilots
Indian National
Indian DGCA issued CPL with Multi Engine Instrument Rating Indian
A-320 Endorsement in the License
A-320 Instrument Rating should preferably be valid or should not have lapsed for more than 01 year on the date of application
Valid COP/RTR and FRTO Licences
Valid Indian Class I medical certificate
Fluency in English - both written and spoken


Many are actually going for the A320 ratings instead of B737, Indigo will be hiring type rated guys for many years to come.

just an advise...

it not easy getting a job as easy getting a 320 TR....

recruitment process are strict and can get rough...
and once u fail.... getting a chance agn is tough...

and expect recruitment frm indigo only, as KFA is personal and GoAir has already finished 3 recruitment's this year,,, and IC will give benefit to CTE guys if the recruit...

The future seems bright for an A320 rated pilot in India. Most of India's airlines fly aircraft from the A320 family (319, 320, 321).

Indigo will have 280 of them by 2025.

GoAir has 10+10 A320s and has just ordered 72 A320 NEOs.

Kingfisher has more than 20 in service and I believe many more on order.

Apart from this, there are always the A330s which are flown by Jet or Kingfisher. A330 operators hire A320 rated pilots (with enough time) for the A330, as the transition training is relatively cheap and very quick. I had heard that they had recently hired ex-Indigo pilots for their A330s (not sure how true this is).

Once you get enough time under the belt, there are always international airlines. Word is that AirAsia will be beating Indigo's world record order, and order as many as 200 A320s (probably all NEOs) at the Paris Air Show this week. Keep your ears open.

6E or any other airline will keep phasing out some aircrafts as the new ones keep coming. Although not at the same rate at which new aircraft are inducted.

Figures are indicative only. For all you know, Indigo will cancel half their orders mid way, and decide to go with a widebody to ramp up international operations?? Who knows whats to happen tomorrow! We might even face another global recession before we know it!!

Just want to give an indicative that it's all good.

Besides, I doubt they will phase out aircraft even in the next 15 years. AI's A320 fleet has an average age of about 17 years!!!!! Ofcourse, thats AIR INDIA! But I doubt Indigo will start phasing out before 2020, if at all.

Future is certainly bright for 320 rated guys in India ...surely its even more great in ASEAN or MIDDLE EAST.

But brightness comes when their is some juice in the form of hours on 320.Sorry for that we need to do best in SIM rides/checks to find a job or burn some money for line training( P2F - Certainly NO for most & me ).For Capt Morgan i dont think any Indian Airline will hire an EXPAT F/O without hours going by the start of thread.( No offence EXPAT's ).

But there are many 320 rated guys in India and thread starter wanted to know if its possible in India for fresh 320 pilot to find a job which i would rather politely say is very very less considering Capt Morgan is not local.But 320 rating with solid total time on Multi Engine will shine the job prospect of anyone....if ATPL then its better.

CPL with multi jet hours & 320 rating - Bright chance for finding 320 job.
ATPL with jet hours & 320 rating - Even more brighter chance for 320 job.
CPL with no multi jet hours or turbine hours & 320 rating - Chance but with hardluck.
CPL with no multi jet hours & basic ME time with 320 rating - Debt for certain time and depression...lucky to find a job if one is skilled and clearing 320 sim check.

PS: Dont bring plane orders with prospect of getting job if one is rated on those type of ordered planes.2005-2007 will re-visit for God Sake again.It will create MAD rush like we had in those BOOM time for CPL's and recently for B737.

Absolutely agree with what you have said.

I actually did not notice that Capt. Morgan is posting from the US. If he is indeed an expat, then it will be a bit difficult for him (and he has very few hours too).

I sure do hope that my mentioning plane orders does not create any mad rush for A320 type ratings. If anyone gets influenced by my post, and does his TR, I would probably say he deserves the kick in the rear he will get once he gets his endorsement.

That said, you will not disagree that with all the new orders, jobs will be available for a few years to come. Albeit, not humongous in number, or even continuous. They will pop up every now and then. Before this is shot down by some negativity as I often do see in these threads, let me just say that if you are a good pilot, and you use your idle time to study and keep yourself thorough, there is no doubt you will get a job. I know of fresh CPL holders, with CPLs that are not even a year old who have got jobs on merit. Some even have multiple offers. If a person is incapable of passing an entrance exam, and then a simple interview, he should not blame the system or the process. You should have used that ample free time to be perfect.

Afterall, with the kind of money pilots do make, a year idle after your CPL is really no big deal. I've seen worse.


Getting back to the job scene, also wanted to add that WHERE you have done your TR also matters these days. Airlines prefer reputed TRTOs like CAE.

Also, with the DGCA changing the rules to allow ME CPL holders (even with zero jet time) to appear for and pass the ATPL papers - much like the international frozen ATPL system - it will be beneficial to appear for the papers in July and pass them just to add that caret to your profile.

Jobs on merit, now that was perfect word used by you and i hope you are one of those hard working pilots.

Now coming to the point of your mentioning about plane on order and number of pilots to get job once this planes are delivered.Boy same thing happend in 1990's when private airlines started their operations and not to mention in 2006 with Decan/Spice/Kfa and to some extent IC followed by Indigo in 2007.That was the time when backlogs of 1990's got job and every drunk camel with CPL got into right seat.Worst now those drunk camels are doing checks on new pilots.

So what i mean is job will coming round the year....sometime in small batches( Indigo ) other time's in bulk just like Jetairways. Hardwork and patience works wonder in every field ...same goes for flying job.

Now by not diverting from THREAD lets end this subject about plane order's and merit thing.Shall we?

Appreciate all the valuable feedback guys! I should have clarified at the top that I'm not an expat. I just happened to be in the states when I opened a pprune account and neglected to update that ever since.

Noticed an opening for trainee FOs at GoAir. Considering that they have done three recruitments already this year, as was mentioned in one of the replies above, I wonder when this one would come to fruition.
