Any ideas why they would open up the website after 2 years of not accepting online applications

Anyone know what is payscale for FO. Is it true you can be based in U.S. LAX. I was told once the FO's make about 8000 a month is that true, it seems that's more than CX first year pay. Thanks and Happy New Year to all

At this moment, they are not recruiting expatriates.
Moreover, CAL has been not renewing expatriate contracts until last October.
At this moment, CAL is renewing expatriate contracts in local terms between one to three years.

From almost 390 expatriates at the beginning of 2007, we are less than 55 in the B744 and no more than 15 in the B738/333/343 fleets.

Our salaries were cut around U$D 1,000 for FO and U$D 2,500 for Capt per month.
After one year, we haven't had received any notification about rising again the salaries after passing the economy crisis...CAL is posting profit again in the Taiwanese news paper.

Salary for an expatriate FO is around:
Basic Salary: U$D 3,500
Market Allowances: U$D 500
Housing Allowances:NT$ 36,000

All these figures are taxable, 20% flat. But after one year if you were more than 183 days in Taipei/Taiwan you could reduced to 10% and have tax refund in August.

Perdiem is U$D 2 per hour.

Expatriates are paid by flight time (TO to Landing), taxi time is excluded from our pay.
The salary is calculated based in 70 hrs flight time per month.

12 salaries plus a bonus (Basic Salary only).

Taxi time excluded from pay?

Can't say I will ever look at another CAL jet on the taxiway the same way again. It's no wonder there are so many incidents of CAL jets taking off from taxiways.

Seems to me, crews are in a rush to get their pay clocks started at the expense of situational awareness.

WOW
Thanks for taking time and posting the info for us. $4000.00 a month for flying a widebody...I hope they are making a billion a year in profit. I am 4th year FO flying a A320 and make around $9100.00 a month. its sad.... you guys should be paid double of what I am making. Thanks for saving me time in doing the application. God bless you guys and hope they start giving you guys what you worth.

Not only the money is everything in life. The home leave is 8 consecutive days per month and we can request back to back.

Bases are in Frankfurt and Vancouver, very few are based in LAX.

And the B747-400 is the best we can fly until the B747-8 is taking the sky.

Anyway, money wise is not a good place and not even for career in the last 3 years only two or three expatriates have been upgraded to Captain.

Hot cabin crew in CI??? Are you serious???
The worst relationship between cabin and cockpit crew i have ever seeing.

The only thing they do is stay at the hotel room and eat instant noodles.

Yes, you are right...the noodles are hot and spicy.

If you get local terms, do they put you in a local seniority list, or they want the cake and eat it too

WOW thats a shame......How do people get up in morning and go to work with these payrates. I never thought it would be that low. Is there anything good about the company that make people stay. Best of luck to you guys.

Futbaliera, first point, expatriates can not join the CAL's Pilot Union.
Second, they have been fighting to erase the expatriates from CAL since at least 2004.

According to CAL written policy, there is only one seniority list for everyone. Again, according to CAL, there is no difference between UND trainees, Lufthansa trainees, BAE trainees, ROC Air Force or expatriates.
But if you ask me what is my seniority number in CAL...I have to answer that I don't know...

So, you can find guys becoming Captains after 8 years in CAL and other with 10 or more and still in the right seat.

Besides, for been selected to upgrade, you have to pass an advance oral which is very tricky one.

Its low alright!

Before signing the "contract", they said that the company policy is FO will get FI pay, which is FO pay - $1000 for the first three years (after checked out), and resume normal pay after that. I am in my fifth year and still getting FI pay and was given an excuse that the company is not making money! And they said no where in our contract says three years! What about the policy? you might ask, well... its top secret and hidden from employees. (pilots)

As for Union? all I know about them is paying union fee every month, thats it!
Nothing to worry about if you can not join!

Everything cosmic said is exactly correct guys. Stay away from China Airlines and pass it on to your friends. I have 5 years personal experience there. Only one correction, FO housing WAS 30000.ntd/month (about 1k usd) less 20% tax=net about 800usd. However I believe that this will dissapear with the new facility that is is being built at the airport. All foreingers will be parked in the tower most likely and commute home.

A word on commuting, 8 days a month. The rest is theirs. So don't think you will have lots of time off the other 22 days in between flights. Nope. You only get flight time credit for flying. Off to On time. And so in between a long haul flight you will do lots of short turn flights. You will prob only have 1 day off a week. Commuting time is on your 8 day time. So effectively, you will only have a few days a month of healthy time in your home town.

All else is totally correct. Salary, PD, etc etc is ****.

Read between the lines gents. 400 multinational people from all over the world a few years ago and now about 50 or less? What do yout think is happening here? Do you think you will be happy here?

Seriously guys.... do not consider ever going to work at this company. They only want to make an extra buck off you faster than they could have by training their own. That is the only reason they would ever entertain you. You will not be part of the family, not part of the union, and you will not get an upgrade. You will probably be terminated the next time they have too many pilots or have abinitio coming into the system. This is reality.

You want an alternative? Dead set on working in Asia? Go to Korean. At least they will tell you that you won't be a captain and pay you more to compensate. Dont go to China Airlines. In fact Korean pays more, and.. 10 days a month off and commuting on company time. And I believe they have end of service pay etc etc. Much better situation and the company is dealing ethically. CAL is not.

btw...China Airlines and Air China are totally different... dont confuse them. China Airlines is Taiwan, Air China is Mainland.
