I have some encouraging news. At last the SLAF has applied for an AOC!!!

As of yesterday the SLAF hangar doors have been thrown open to CAASSL engineers for examinaton.

Will they put Lal Leanarachchi back as Chairman of CAASL? The poor man lost his job because he uttered the truth.

This is a step in the correct direction although it is like asking Pena from the hora's mother!

This thread is more like getting jobs for those who went outside than actually trying to improve the GA in srilanka.

The individuals who speak here have an agenda of their own I presumme, correct me if I'm wrong?

Can some of you say where you were when the national carrier was struggling all these years? Where were you GA was shutdown and all the CPL holders were struggling to maintain sanity? SIA? Those who write that they speakfrom the cockpit of the jumbo jet from 36000 feet...are all who blow their own horns! Quoting from AOC is simple any fool can do that but implementing that and trying to keep hardheads and the so called expat pilots who were voiceless in their expat airlines now suddenly get their voice back is not a easy job for our CAA.

I say we have done well, the president did well, the country men who stayed on and fought did well and they need to be recognized in what ever way that seems right. We have managed our business well, we haven't crashed and we will learn from our mistakes BUT what we definitely don't need is the expertise advice from people whose only qualification since leaving our shores have been criticism, please try giving that to your expat airlines! I guess they never listened to you so why should we!

As for president, his forces commanders, regulaters and all other aviators who stuck on...go on and do your job...it might have it's ups and downs but you are there in the forefront and that's what counts!

We have seen all these kalu sudu mahathaya's who boast of experience in all fields but it a buch of bull**** and they are all bull**** artist with an accent.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

A friend is planning to come to Sri Lanka on holiday. He holds current FAA CPL/CFI ratings and is current on Cessna 152/172/182s. Is it possible for him to be checked out to fly solo in Sri Lanka? What GA flying is available?

The story continues.........

........If nothing else, at least for the benefit of those who are still wondering..........six years down the road, as to what the 'state of GA is in Sri Lanka'........allow me to enlighten ladies and gents please......

I am a Sri Lankan by birth, but a Canadian citizen by choice, who is currently on a visit to Sri Lanka, and am awaiting word of whether or not I may be allowed to engage in what is essentially a brief joy ride outside the restricted airspace from VCCC......perhaps to VCBI and back to VCCC.

I carry both FAA and Transport Canada private pilot's licenses and minus a brief absence from active recreational flying in the nineties, I have been very regularly recreationally plying the skies over numerous states in the US since the mid eighties nearly as much as I now do in Canadian skies where I now reside.

Light aircraft such as the Cessna 150, 152, 172 and the Piper PA28-181 are no stranger to me. But with many hundreds of hours of VFR flying under my belt, the thought occurred to try and fulfill a long standing bucket list item of carrying out a short VFR flight in my native Sri Lankan skies from the left seat while on a brief visit. I thought obtaining a permit to fly with an instructor beside me in the right seat on the strength of my fairly well respected foreign licenses might not be as daunting a task as one might imagine.

Having lived close to the Ratmalana airstrip in my teens in the seventies; spending hours gawking in to the airport property from outside numerous perimeter fences was a common activity for me. I even had the pleasure of being invited in to the airport by one of Upali's pilot's and shown the then nearly new, Cessna Citation their organization owned at the time amongst other hardware. Oh the wonder and the smell of new aircraft leather!

But having submitted all pertinent documents to include copies of passport, pilot's licenses, medical certificates, relevant pages from the log books over the years, police report from whence I live.....etc.....etc.....it appears even now, in the year 2016, the ministry of defence is still involved in the decision to permit a brief civilian GA flight. There are still a few more days left in my visit, but the trip is rapidly coming to an end, along with possibly some of the VFR weather we might be enjoying currently. Unless my cynical personality is quite surprised and I am granted a permit this week, my hopes of this ever coming to pass are rapidly diminishing.

Much compliments, praise and accolades must go to a flight training facility that I have been in touch with to accomplish this feat, and one particularly patient and accommodating employee within that company, who's demeanour has been nothing less than completely delightful.

Well, I'll keep everyone informed. So long for now.

This is a silly place, they talk about establishing ICAO standards and norms but its full of corruption.

This was a place and still is where serving Airforce personal given CAA jobs , one guy managed to pass his ATPL while serving as a C130 instructor in the Airforce and Direc Ops at CAA, another got the job when this guy left.
DG is been backed by couple ex Airline Captains who think they owne aviation in SL, Sl will never move forward if these two parties are involved

1/ Airoforce ( retired or serving) because they d not know Civil operations
2/ Ex Airline Captains who think CAA is their retirement job , these uys joined the airlines 25 years ago and they simply dont know Flying set up in school and Domestic and really stubborn not to give these opportunities for young qualified people.

hi, does anyone see a chance of airline activity from HRI. some of the unspolied tourist spots are in the vicinity.

23 Apr 2015 - The Government has decided to adopt full Open Skies policy for commercial aircraft operating into and out of Mattala Rajapakse International Airport, with immediate effect. According to the new policy, the following opportunities would be available.
  • All Nine freedoms of the Air (pl see the appendix) to be made available to any local or foreign airlines for commencement of operations based in MRIA for both local and international passengers and cargo operations on first come first serve basis.
  • Self-handling facility or Ground Handling Services at very competitive prices.
  • Concessionary landing and parking charges.
  • Investment opportunities for establishment of MRO facilities or aviation related business activities with land being made available on well thought and properly designed land use planning.
  • Permission to put up airline/MRO own hangar facilities on a design to be approved by the airport authorities.

New Operators

Sl domestic have been very quite for some time but heard few new start ups

Once again the pathetic situation of the Flying school set up it very sad to see.

I heard a new venture starting Sakurai air is going to get down new aircraft hence when I got to know the people who have joined the same rotten faces from Rathmalana then I can imagine the fate of the operations as well

Ego

Well another bunch of guys with ego looking at loosing all their savings , this country will never ever learn as long as Helitours offering tickets and doing cheap tickets undercutting all the other operators with subsidies fuel from CPC and air force chaps flying on government wages and allowance.

Look at all the Domestics - They are all closed, nobody can survive. This company was given Mattala for 50 000 USD according to the CAA, even CAA is laughing at these jokers where they have told them the possible aircraft types are all high performance and Japanese students . CAA is very eager to see how long the CFi will stay since he has worked at every school as a CFI and left after a dispute. LOL

I think aircraft simulation training has more potential since operating costs are low in SL. If I remember correct, there is one Airbus facility in Cambodia too. Would like to start a Boeing facility there if there's a chance.
