DGCA can solve this shortage in 2 yrs if the just allow direct conversion of FAA/JAA/CASA CPLs for Indian students and let expat Capts/TRE work in India longer than 1 yr contract.
Airlines will have longer staying Capts and local co-pilots ....aahhh the dream..

Alas
Alas...Things move at their own pace in India..When I was there, had a tough time from the DGCA during the VIVAs...Looked like they were taking out their frustration with Paramount on me. Why not conduct a simple air law exam and get it over with...Of course, expat fo s will have it even tougher I assume...what with them having to sit for the ATPL exam all over again...Wonder how the local fo s will feel about expat fo s coming into the picture.

From ICAO Annex 1 to JAR ATPL
I can understand the frustration to go once more in the ATPL exams, but:
1) There is a minimum standard which has been set a very long time ago in the ICAO ANNEX 1, and some States are estimating this is sufficient. Under the International Chicago Convention, they are right and it is sufficient to negotiate bi-lateral agreements and crewing their own registered aircraft.
2) Some other states are estimating that this minimum standard is not acceptable and are requiring more. They are right and can proceed that way
3) One super power is cheating: in its own airlines, recruitments are based on a sound experience/and or academic knowledge gained through University grades, but for export reasons this is not reflected in the licensing system which is just the nearly basic Annex 1.
At the end, you have a variety of ATPLs which are very different in their contents. It is the interest of the professional communauty to clean the deck and update the licensing systems to the best standard, for safety and respect of our passengers and also in order to affirm the social level of Airline Pilots.
All those University grades which are necessary to get a job alongside with a license are confusing, create several categories of ATPL. And what about the contents and the consistency with modern aviation?
Indian Authorities exert their rights to estimate that some licences are not of the standards they require and ask you to pass some exams: it is their rights, and this is laudable.
********
Such a difference with an ATPL requiring a total of 200 hours of ground school, with an IR of 10 hours of flight and another ATPL requiring 1000 hours of Ground School, an IR of 55 hours + one MCC!!! And what tomorrow with the MPL(s) and the various interpretations already on the way.

Can an Indian pilot with 250 hrs fresh CPL expect to get a job in Spain or any part of EU.....NO !
Its the same all over Asia for FO xpat jobs no jobs for low time xpats....Pls dont think of Asia as an open house for low time pilots there are enough locals who can fill these jobs...
The Indian boom caught every one off guard give it 2 yrs ad all FOs will be local. With only xpat Capts.

dire trouble
heard that paramount is facing a severe pilot shortage...they might have to ground their new planes. also, they are facing a cash crunch. heard that staff salaries were not paid. some of the local pilots have put in their papers. also, still no signs of a chief pilot....looks like paramount is going down...

Just had a call from Risthworth asking if I was still interested in the job with Paramount. I asked if they had any new details on salary as I wouldn't move to India for 2 years for only the qouted salary. They said they would e-mail it to me again.....

HEY PETE, i dont give a rats to whay u think of some of the indian co-pilots but let me tell u and every other arrogant EXPAT like you that when it comes to multitasking, you guys are so pathetic that i wonder if a monkey would do better. I have flown with some of u bafoons and it appears that the only reason u r allowed to fly in our country is because you are eligible on paper . WITH RESPECT to all other EXPATS people like you are a disgrace to aviation who think like that for a co-pilot. I have so much to say, but its so useless to try and teach you guys your mistakes, as some of you are so foolishly arrogant . BEWARE !!!! INDIA is changing. .

Broad Band Internet
Sorry if this appears to be a bit of thread drift. I've read that one Indian Airline provides an apatment in Mumbia as housing. Is it likely that an apartment in a residential area would have Broadband Internet available at a reasonable charge? What would that monthly charge be - approximately.
Thanks for any information provided - and sorry for the thread drift.
