Its a renewable contract. Good chance of upgrade for FOs on a second contract. No flow through to the big iron unless you finish the contract, re-apply on a jet contract, and you need 1000 hrs jet time. Might change in the futur, due to the upcomming shortage. Although change is VERY slow here in Japan.

still hiring???

Hey, anyone still monitoring this thread?

Looking to leave the US regionals for Japan... DHC Typed.

Do they absolutely require 500 PIC on Dash for the Cap position?

They have been wavering with the requirements, so it will depend how short they are and what other PIC time you have. I would not recommend this contract for copilots unless you are fairly low time. As captain, its OK but....

We now are working 5 days on, 1 off steadily while in Japan, with 10-12 overnights a month. You will find you don't have much of a life here, and it is hard to maintain a life elsewhere with essentially two weeks off each two months. The only allowances you get are the living plus commuting, total USD 3000, and you will probably need all of that just to live quietly by yourself in Osaka. Also, be aware that there are significant differences between the HACS and Parc contracts. Remember that if it is not in the contract you will not get it.

In the long term they may suggest that upgrades to captain and movement to jets are possible, but no copilot has been upgraded and the only way you will be allowed to go to jets is to complete this contract and then apply for a jet contract if you have the qualifications. There are no shortcuts here for a prop-jock.

Hey Thanks O-Joe,

Do you or anyone know through which company (HAS or Parc) it is better to apply, and which one will waive the 500 pic on type requirements.

I think I should qual otherwise with 4200 TT, 2700 PIC, 3600 twin with 600 on DHC-8 with type rating on 121 carrier...

Do you know if there are any jumpseat or ID 90 priviledges to travel to the US or Canada???

Thanks again.

Hello,

I've been talking to Hawaii Aviation about the job; anybody know what these 2 hotels in Osaka that offer crew rates are like? Also, can you bid lines with more overnights to cut down on hotel charges? Finally, the recruiter thought pass privleges on ANA were only within Japan, but he wasn't sure. Can you get passes back to the US on your days off? Any info would be much appreciated!

Sorry I don't have time for more indepth explanations, but I hope the following helps:

1000tl: Both contract companies have the same requirements, as set by A-Net. The pay/conditions are slightly different though.

bushpilot: The hotels in Japan generally have small rooms, and the two in Osaka are OK, but not fancy. However, Japanese law requires you to have a permanent residential address in Japan (not hotel or company office) before you can get an Alien Registration Card and you need that to get a reentry permit. Also, you will find after six months of training that you won't feel like staying in a hotel anymore.
There is no mechanism to bid or ask for anything in your schedule - you have to accept what is assigned.
You are entitled to ANA international passes after six months, and zed fares on star alliance and some other carriers. ANA domestic passes are limited and only available after 12 months.

moontowers: I did the precontract medical screening in New York; I don't know where they will send you. You have to go through the whole medical thing again in Japan at about the four month point in the training (after the sim check). After that they start to get easier.

1000tl: The training is six months long (including OJT), as required by JCAB. It begins with 5-6 weeks in Tokyo doing air law, radio, licence written and other general stuff. Then the Q400 groundschool and sim will be at Flightsafety in Toronto (about 2 months). The JCAB medical is next, just a day or two in Osaka. Once your licence is issued you return to Japan for local flying and finally OJT. Usually there is a week or so between each stage, but that can vary. A-Net will have its own sim in Tokyo late next year, but until then all recurrent sim is in Toronto.

Pucky: Whether you enjoy it depends a lot on why you come. If you come for the money or rating you almost certainly won't enjoy it. If you are interested in Japan or contract work you probably won't hate it. I think every westerner gets frustrated dealing with the Japanese system, and stressed living in Japan where we are illiterate, confused and ill-mannered. There is also a time-in-contract function (I haven't figured if it is direct proportion or exponential) that causes decreased happiness the longer you stay. So my answer is: 100% of us are unhappy with A-Net/the contract sometimes, and 80% are unhappy frequently and looking for the next job. About 12% have left with less than two years in the contract (but this is related to the job market and subject to change). Personally, I don't regret coming here and I will have many happy memories, but I don't see A-Net as a long term job anymore and would leave tomorrow for a career position.

From my experience with different contracts in several different countries, I would put this at around the 3 year mark**** - that seems to be when the people on contract have made a determination as to how well THEY have adjusted to the new culture, and how well they believe they have been accpeted by THEM (the new company & the permanent employees).
A LOT depends on the latter, in my honest opinion.

Whereas in other companies, in other countries, I got the impression that the longer I was there, and performed to their requirements, the more I was accepted, Japan has proven to be far different.
Despite all of the foreigners coming here with extensive experience - in many cases more hours than most Japanese will achieve in their entire flying career - the partial, reluctant acceptance by the Japanese, of foreigners, appears to start at around the 5 years (of flying in Japan) mark, as long as he has had no accident/incident.

But gaijin Captains will NEVER be as accepted as even the most junior Japanese F/O - by the company execs, the cabin crew, nor the taxi drivers.

Most companies reward their employees the longer they remain with a company - and this is true for the Japanese employees. However, as a foreigner this has not been the case - as a matter of fact, conditions were eroded - until recently.
It would appear for those of us with JAL Express, that there might be a new wind of change blowing, with a more open-minded, progressive style of management.
But it`s taken almost 7 years to occur!

****The 5 year mark also seems to be a wall most of the guys hit - imho, it`s the psychological time that we start to notice the pressures of the work in a foreign company, culture and land. Personally, I would have liked a nice looooong (paid) break (6-8 weeks).........something the contract companies might think about incorporating into future contracts, if they want to keep existing pilots.

Even the back end won't accept you ?

I thought they liked the round eyes. We treat them alot better than Japanese men.

One guy said they looked at us as their ticket out of there.
