Indian class 1 medical- eyesight issue

Hello guys,
Well am 19 years old and at present aspiring to become a pilot like many others and doing my flight training from US of A. I have been through my class 2 and class 1 medical at AFCME, New Delhi and there is one doubt which always troubles me so i thought i would today write down and ask from you.

We all know that for a pilot, remaining fit in medicals is utmost priority. I have weak eyesight (-) 4 in both eyes which as expected caused an issue in class 1 medical where they temporarily rejected me and a few others for various reasons and told me to redo the tests. Got the tests done, was ok so got my medical.

Here in Miami, a few guys told me that i would face issues in future with my weak eyesight as airlines dont want guys with spectacles:ugh:, dont know how much truth is there in it, as my power is more weak compared to others i am scared if i will face issues in future where airlines like JET have their own medicals.

Cant those like me get a lasik done to remove this power, theres a special lasik surgery for it. Sometimes i have sleepless nights fearing i may get rejected in a medical for this eyesight issue and its all over :{

Dont know but really want to know if i will face hardships when searching for jobs, if at all we get those soon, would a weak eyesight like -4 be a ground of rejection, could AFCME itself create an issue in 3rd ear renewal?

Thanks, want honest answers, so much of tension regarding this so jotted it down today..

i agree with iflysoon.....i just want to add that if u go for lasik surgery....dat will make u permanently unfit.

coolboy007 8th Mar 2011 17:47

iflysoon,
A big thanks to you buddy :D, a positive response which i was least expecting. Didnt knew there were guys working in Jet and others with power that weak, that tension in my mind is removed for now.
Would be thankful if you could PM me about any eye exercises or link which you know of. I would give those guys a answer back next time.
Thanks mate :)

flight517,
Thanks mate, even i have no plans of lasik for now and after reading all this, never. Use contact lenses at present, which hve stabilised the power for a long time, specs is ok with me.

Is laser surgery ok with class 1 medicals?

coolboy007 8th Mar 2011 18:56

Clim nd Maintain,
Thanks bro, am fit according to class 1 medicals, not a problem there. These replies make me wanna go for a vacation and enjoy.
Yeah, am flying at Dean :E, seems 80% indians go there only.

37thousandfeet,
The colonel at AFCME advised me against it and said we need a prior permission before doing anything like that.

If you dont know facts is best to shut up.

I did LASIK , had -8 and -9 diopters before and now have 20/20 vision both eyes. I have a valid FAA , Canadian and an Indian Class 1 medical which was renewed for the 2nd time this Feb.

LASIK IS allowed by DGCA and my renewal medical just took half the day incl waiting times and I got my medical issued.

coolboy007 10th Mar 2011 12:09

Rahul,

Easy bro:), whats the need to get so angry.
Thanks for telling that, didnt know we could do Lasik though not interested in one right now. If i can manage with spectacles, its fine:ok:

Increase your update of Vitamin C.

I know you will say that they taught Vitamin A is good for eyesight and not C.

But Vitamin C just like Vitamin A is an antioxidant... unlike Vitamin A vitamin C is water soluble and excess intake will not cause side-effects.. good supply of Vitamin C will ensure that Vitamin A and E do not deplete and are available in higher concentrations.

DGCA -lasik

Hi there guys
I have a doubt regarding the DGCA medicals .I have done both my class 2 and class 1 medical. I have had LASIK surgery on both my eyes around three and half years back. My power was around -3 before I did the surgery. Before going to DCGA medical I went to eye test with 4 eye hospitals ( the best one in my city) all declared that I have 6/6 vision. In my class 2 also I was declared that I have 6/6 vision. But in my class one the eye doctor told that I have a power of -0.5(axis -65) in my right eye alone .he told my left eye has 6/6 vision. After which he told me to get a special OCT scan just to check the health of my cornea. End of the day the doc told that everything is fine. But that I have to wear glasses while flying alone. He told that if I would come for a normal eye test he would have not given me glass .he said there is just a minute power in right eye alone and some minute residual power would be there even after Lasik ( he told that normal).
When my DGCA class one arrived 3 months later. My DGCA class one medical says “HAS MET PRESCRIBED MEDICAL STANDARDS. Below this there is a limitations section –this section in blank. Below this that is a section call recommendation. In which 3 codes are given. The explanation for these codes were given at the back.
.33- to exercise the privileges of the glasses with corrective Glasses
.82 – Advised carriage spare set of spectacles while flying
.174- All Review at IAM/AFCME

I have 4 questions
1. I stay in chennai ,India. There is a Airforce base here that does in the renewal of class 1 medical(Senior Medical Officer,Air Force Station,Tambaram,Chennai 600046) . Can do my class 1 renewal here or should I go only to an IAM Bangalore / DELHI AFCME centre.?
2. Does the word review mean renewal?
3. As I have said earlier I have done lasik already . But still the dgca class 1 doctor has prescribed specs for me. When I go for an interview with an airline would I be looked at in a different way for this? That is even though I do better than the other guys in the interview the fact that I have done a lasik am still wearing glasses ,( Right eye -0.5, left eye -6/6 ) is that going to weigh down heavily on me .
4. Are IAM and AFCME medical centers very strict compared to the civil medical centers like Apollo hospital?
5. Which is stricter IAM or AFCME ? Would like to take my renewal with the stricter center ?I would be starting my flight training soon and want to get rid of this baggage soon !
Thanks a million for your time. Cheers :ok::ok:

Dude my friend is working with jet he has eyesight -3.75 and -4 and he is doing completely fine. He only had issuie with his eye sight only in initial medicals later he never had any problems with regarding eye check up not even on his 4th renewal or initial recruitment with jet. All eye doctors want is only one thing so long your eye sight weather corrected with glasses or not should be 6/6 thats it. Talking about lasik eye surgery I heard that you cant fly commercially for one year after done with your surgery ( Again plz confirm with some one I might be wrong ). So just chill relax and do your flying.

VT-ASM 31st Aug 2011 16:37

There are people in my flying school with -6 and -8 power and they have cleared their class 1 tests.
This issue of not clearing is caused by some overzealous doctors. Unless of course there is some other issue.
I would not recommend LASIK
But if you still want your eyesight to improve, You can try Sampoorn eye yoga at Bandra, mumbai. I know this works because of some references of this person from a friend who joined the Navy and one chap at work....

Hope this helps,

Cheers !

DGCA CLASS 1 Renewal

Thanks VT-ASM and ffa6890b5b874d51ae85. I had LASIK about three and half years back. The doc told my eyes are fine. Just was concerned regarding the discretion shown on lasik candidates by airline. Thanks for the info again. It takes a lot of burden off my heart. Will check out regarding the Sampoorn eye yoga also.

Also would like an head up on whether to go AFCME or IAM bang for renewal of my DGCA class 1? And what are the test that are done in renewal apart from the special eye test in my case .Cheers . Thanks for your time .

Bro I am just relief and all my doubts and tension is removed now. As I was too having a high myopia with the number same as yours with high spherical and some cylindrical in it. So 4 months before I underwent Lasik Surgery as mention by DGCA Bladeless Femtosecond Customvue Lasik and now there is a huge improvement in vision and both eyes combined having vision of 6/6. So they told me for a cooling period of 6 months so bro my question is in month of February I would be giving Class 2 and class 1 so will it get approve smoothly..?? I'm concern only for vision

The requirement of DGCA is very simple they just say 6/6 with or without spectacles so instead of Orth Lens they will say you to wear spectacles and will make you fit for your Class 1 medical.:)
