No FO recruitment at present. Guess you don't know how the seniority system works, you will need some to get a Europe base as lots of guys would like one as none have been available for a few years. Also tax issues at the moment so probably no DEFO onto bases until it is sorted out and all those who want a base have got one. I notice all your posts are just asking the same thing for Hong Kong Airlines, Etihad and now CX. Why not spend a bit of time actually reading some threads and info online and you will soon understand what is going on.

Hello

Thanks for your informative message... I do understand how seniority works as i am on one of those lists already currently as long as you are on the Cathay One..
To be honest I prefer to ask questions and try get direct answers from current crews who know how things are going on, Im not interested in spending all my time reading threw 100's of useless posts and in the end knowing lots of waffle. Maybe im lazy who knows..... :=

Im just looking to move to Asia for personal reasons and am trying to get myself as much Information as i can on Operators. Thanks for your Info on Cathay.

Not a chance will they be able to hire DEFO straight into HKG, not without paying billions in bypass pay to exisitng S/O's.

Even if they do, what you can expect with the most current package is work your butt off for your cozy little 400 sq ft apartment (useable area about 300 sq ft), in which your single bed snugly fits right in between the walls. Perfect for you to bang your head upon waking up every morning, wondering what the heck were you thinking coming here in the first place. And of course you can do that for at least 6 years as well cause you'd be in so much debt the second you put ur autorgraph on that contract with the newly introduced "forgivable loan".

As for getting a European base, sure you can. If you join in your early 20's, planning to work till 65, you *might* get it just before you hang it up. That's provided they can eventually sort their sh*t out with the IRD, if ever.

DEFO Cathay

Currently in Cathay website they say that not hiring at the moment Direct entry First Officers, but in the instance that CX resumes accepting/hiring DEFO, what's the likelihood of getting a base in Europe? I heard that's only for cargo routes, but I'm not sure.
Can anyone confirm if with +2000h 737 and full ATPL, my application as DEFO will be accepted?
I would be very pleased if someone can briefly say how is a normal roster in CX.

Thanks and safe flying!!

Actually DEFO on bases will happen sooner than u think.

CX use to have an in house dept organizing bases. They lacked the skills to do it correctly. A Swire man has currently moved into office to get things right. They are shocked at the mess, and are frantically searching to solve things.

They are currently doing a test run in the US, to sponsor green cards.

Other based ports are under review and will need to be filled very soon. They are just working out a method which would result in the least court cases & costs.

Full Expat contracts in HK are under pressure due to a new discrimination law that says Locals need the same terms. Thus doing a feable attempt to get all new expats on local terms, to avoid an uproar.

This has bitten them in the teeth as they are 160 behind in the 250 aimed recruitment they need this year. Next yr 200.

Thus they have given an improved draft "final" offer to see.
Sadly it won't work either as there are simply not enough interested.

Strangely it will become similar costs for those on full Expat terms and those on bases.

What is more important is getting experience pilots & now as many Planes are arriving ASAP. HKA are starting to poach Cx & KA pilots aswell.
(ironically most locals) Cx lost about 30 pilots last year.

So don't sign anything yet. There will be DESO on expat terms & DEFO on some bases soon. Cx will need to get out their wallet & soon. That is why the threatening you with "Final Offer" as a last disparate attempt to see if it could maybe work before going back to the old days of hiring.

This is a winning batting wicket for pilots, but just don't get run out too soon you can NEVER regain what you lost! be warned. :\

Have faith & balls! Hang in there for awhile! Make up professional excuses.. Getting married this year, just bought a new house long notice period needed etc. Thus stall things for a few months.

:ok:

Free Wings,

If +2000 hrs 737 is about 6000 then yes you have a chance if they start DEFO again. If it is just over 2000 then no, not any chance at all, would be towards the bottom of the DESO pile when that is how they were recruiting.

They are currently doing a test run in the US, to sponsor green cards.
Why do they need to do that? Don't they have plenty of pilots, with a right to work in the US already?

I suppose for the same reason FedEx have over 100 US pilots based in Hong Kong when there are more than enough locals to fill the spots?

GTC58 23rd Mar 2011 21:59

The statement that CX is applying for US green cards is incorrect. CX is presently applying for work permits for all commuting Canadians already on US bases.

Also, regarding bases there is a continuous cost analysis going on in terms of savings and if you believe what some of the 3rd floor managers have to say that base savings at the moment are minim due to onshoring cost, complying with local labour law (for example long term leave Australia) and legal challenges. The HEADLAND hotel is booked at capacity, so where do all the future based pilots lay-over.

Until all the immigration, labour law and legal challenges are solved I doubt there will be many base openings.

flynhigh 23rd Mar 2011 22:19

How are they planning to do that….even U.S. carriers can’t get that…What a waste of time and money…?

There are 5 main ways an individual can obtain residency and work authorization in the United States:

Sponsorship by an Employer
Investment
Sponsorship by a close Family Member in the United States
The Diversity Visa Lottery Program
Asylum & Refugee Status

H1B Specialty Occupation Visas
Description:
This is a visa for people coming to the USA to work for a US employer in a professional-level position. Valid for 3 years initially, can be extended to 6.
Candidate Requirements:
Candidate must have secured job offer from a US source.
In order to get an H1B visa you will need the equivalent of a US College or university degree in a relevant subject.
If you have been educated outside the US, this requirement can often be met by:
EITHER - A non-US and/or only partly relevant degree, followed by three or more years work experience.
OR – Twelve years of high-level work experience.
NB If you wish to practice a profession such as law, medicine, or accountancy, etc, you will also need to obtain the relevant State or Federal license to practice in the place of intended employment.

If CX was to offer permanent residency ("green card") to SO's who'd be based in the States, CX would have to 1) prove to the Dept.of Labor there are no suitable and willing candidates found among locals, 2) pay prevailing wage.

You can try to accomplish No.1 by openly advertising the position(s) and turning down all applications from locals using criteria locals can't meet; to accomplish No.2 you probably will have to do a survey of local "equivalent' airlines and their wage structure to come up with a prevailing wage for the SO position.

Not to say CX doesn't have experience in immigration issues, but I'd guess the U.S. DOL and INS are quite a different animal compared to what CX deals on a daily basis.

T-Mass 23rd Mar 2011 22:39

flynhigh,

H-1B specialty occupation work permit would be tricky also, as there is an annual quota set by Congress (the number of permits per year is a dynamic number, ranging from 50k to 140k+, all dependent on how Congress votes on the subject) AND there is a mad race to have your petition submitted by the end of the set deadline for the year. On more than one occasion the quota has been met within hours of the application window opening. If you are left out, you may not resubmit until the following year's application window opens.

After all that, the permit is for 3 years, after which it is possible to extend it for another 3 years (not a guaranteed approval). Then, after 6 years of work, you're out, no if's or but's. You must leave the country and can return under the H-1B status only after a year.

All in all, too many potholes for CX to stumble on if you ask me.

Try L-1A. First ones already approved. Of course they are not for SOs.

GTC,

learn something new every day. not always positive, but new nevertheless. thanks for the info.
