SO P2X Rating

Before I was hired at Cx I asked on here whether SOs get an aircraft type rating on there HK license. I wanted to know whether I could transfer it to my home country license in case there was layoffs etc. I received a whole set of conflicting answers. Now that I am here, I can tell you that you DO NOT get a rating. You get a thing called a P2X on you license but not in the rating section. You can not transfer the 747/777/340 to another countries license. If memory serves me correctly I think people said don't worry cause Cx has never laid off. Lets hope that stays true now.

How has it been for you so far? How was training, indoc, etc. Any regrets?
Any advice for the next round of S/O new hires?

Rook 31st Mar 2009 08:41

Actually i love it. Great job. Brilliant schedule. The training was excellent in all regards so far. Nobody seems out for my head yet! No regrets (as long as they dont lay off!)
Not sure what advice I can give. If you are yourself in the interview and prepare well you will be ok. The training is not a spoon feed system so you need to do lots of prep on your own time. But with schedule as it is, it isn't too bad. Any specific questions PM and i'll do my best.

Good to hear you like it! Finally someone with a little good news. When were you hired and when did you finish training? I'm just killin' time in the hold file.

"You can not transfer the 747/777/340 to another countries license."

Not true. I flew with a guy who turned his 340/330 P2X and 744 P1 into type ratings on his FAA license. It only took a short visit to his FSDO.

Sioux115, you at Horizon?

Rook 2nd Apr 2009 02:46

What's an FSDO? an FAA thing?

sdsaab 2nd Apr 2009 03:38

Yeah, it is. From Wikipedia:

A Flight Standards District Office, or FSDO, is a regional office of the United States Federal Aviation Administration. There are about 82 such regional offices nationwide.

I have only heard of one pilot's experience with transferring the type ratings. I didn't believe the guy until he showed me his license and all the letters from the FAA. Maybe he got lucky.

Rook,

On a different subject, what's a CX SO schedule like, can you give me an example month rota?? I dunno how long you have started, but can you give me an indication what is a SO's salary fresh from Cadet? As I'm getting a bit of conflicting info. Cheers.

I hope you can get the type rating as well as if i get through, I would like to fly in another country as well.

Cheers again.

The rules may be different with the authorities from various countries but many allow the transfer of ratings from a HK licence to the respective country's licence.

I was able to transfer my B747-400 P2X and A330 P1 ratings on my HK licence to my Australian licence as a Co-Pilot B747-400 and Command A330 respectively.

Well I may stand corrected, maybe this issue is as grey as it seemed. I might try after all at a Transport Canada Office. The reason I thought it would is because I thought it wasn't on the ratings page (under the P1 light twin) but there is actually a second ratings page which has the Cx aircraft on it, so maybe. I will report back!

I think Canadian MOT have allowed Air Canada RP,s who were about to be layed off to have their license endorsed with full type rating for the specific aircraft they have been RP. Airbus 330/340 B777, B767
Take note that the training had been completed under Canadian regulations.
Post the question on the AvCanada forum.

With so much negativity towards CX on pprune at the moment here's a reflection from an earlier time.

There was just as much negativity towards CX in fragrant harbour in 2009 as there is now (and many of the same posters still beating the same drum). The forum has always been somewhere to vent for pilots with a bone to pick with the company. In 2009 it was COS08 which was being derided as a contract that was not worth moving to HK for, just as is being done with COS18. Just as many people moved over for COS08, many will move for COS18. The reality is there aren't many companies who offer employment to those with low to medium hours (250-1500 hours) without having to pay for a TR.

Take what you read on PPRuNe with a fairly large grain of salt, there are a fair few unhappy pilots at Cathay but the hatred expressed by posters on Fragrant Harbour isn't representative of the wider pilot body.
