Info For New DEFO
 

Hi:

I have my app in with Cathay. I have a few questions.

1. If hired, would I be able to do DEFO in one of the cities in US.
2. What would I expect for my first year salary, total compensation.
3. Would I be able to do the PAX side or would it be freighter.
4. How long is training and where is it held.
5. How many days would I work every month as a new hire based in the US.

1. Yes, most likely LAX, JFK, or ANC in the US and possibly YYZ or YVR in Canada.

2. More than you are making at Mesa, better if based in Canada.

3. New guys are not designated PAX or freight anymore, however, you get 744 and you will be flying freight.

4. 4-6 months in Hong Kong....come on man do some research, its even on the company website.

5. Depends on base but chances are more days off that at Mesa.

He being a Mesa pilot(or for that matter a regional pilot in the US) would make him very skeptical of a company web site. It is just the nature of the environment he works in.

This is just a rumer, but I was told by a friend of that, you will coming in as Unified DEFO. As been said if you go B777 than you will only fly Pax, but if you are on the B744 they will have you operate a Cargo flight to HKG, get your rest and fly Pax from HKG to somewhere than fly back to HKG get a another rest and operate a cargo flight back to U.S.

Hey Mayday911. Thank you for the information. As someone else posted, I do not believe much that my company (Mesa) tells people on their company website and I don't know that I would believe everything that is on the Cathay site.

I am on reserve at Mesa and work about 20 days a bid with 8 days off. Of those 8 days off, about half of them are moved to days I did not bid. My ability to have time to read all the very informative posts here is limited. I was only trying to get some quick answers to some questions I had.

I know alot of people here discourage people from joining CX. However, I am at a company that would make everyone at CX rethink their feelings about where they work. Mesa will take the joy out of flying and make sure your family does not know you, so any place is a step up in my book.

DEFO's get 42 days of vacation a year. I have been at Mesa for 8 and get 3 weeks off a year. Mesa cancelled vacations last year so I only got one week. This year, they have cancelled vacation through May.

This is why I want to work for Cathay. The pay is good, the time off is good, and your planes look SO much better than the rusty, dirty crap that the US carriers are flying.

I wont argue that point with ya. Mesa does suck. But it is paying the bills until I get a call to better things!
